yearly archives

According to WordPress documentation I found, I shoud be able to make a yearly archive (monthly is just too much) by utilizing a sidebar text widget and entering the shortcode parameters [archives] and [archives type=yearly] in the text box, but I sure cannot get that to work. Thank you in advance for any quick suggestions, including any way to change the supplied default archives widget from monthly to yearly (without editing code). I really appreciate it.
