Yoast Meta Descripts getting lost after theme updates

Every time i update my theme, i loose all the SEO settings. All the Yoast settings are turned off. The most important problem is the meta descriptions… The site i’m referring to is 65 pages so you can see how updating 65 meta descriptions, focus keywords, and titles everytime i update the theme can be problematic. Any Suggestions?
I have done the export/import settings options but that doesn’t deal with specific pages, only broad site wide settings
