Hi. My SEO expert told me, “The Yoast plugin can only detect content added on the main editor of each page. It may not work well or detect changes on the homepage, FAQ or blog top page. I suggest that you only use Yoast for your blog articles.”

Is that correct? Meaning, I should edit the HTML metatags, and not rely on Yoast? I am using the Applay theme on 4upgo.com .

    Thanks much!

That’s correct. By default, the Yoast SEO plugin only analyses the default WordPress content areas. It does not recognize content that is outside of the main content box of a page or post. It does not recognize texts in custom fields or other plugin/theme content boxes as well as those contained in widgets. But some theme developers have modified their code to add compatibility with our plugins while others have not. We’d recommend contacting the developer of your theme to request compatibility. Developers can learn how to integrate with Yoast here.

Thanks for the answer! My site (4upgo.com) uses a rather elaborate theme (applay) and Visual Composer, so I understand you to be saying, I should go into the HTML to edit meta-title, meta-description, meta-keywords on each page. Can/should I use the following Yoast plugin features found on each page: “edit snippet,” “focus keyword”? Can/should I use the Yoast dashboard settings for: “enable advanced settings for site-wide settings for your titles and meta descriptions”, “Company info” (website name, company name), webmaster tools (google search console, etc.). Thanks so much for your help!

To get the best result, we recommend you to use add your content using the WordPress default content editor. In order to add content, you won’t need to go into HTML mode. You can use the WordPress default content editor visual mode.

On the other hand, you can add SEO data in any mode. You won’t need to go HTML mode specifically to add SEO data using the Yoast SEO meta box. You can find the Yoast SEO meta box to all of your content types. We recommend you to add the SEO data from each of your posts or pages rather than using the Yoast SEO global settings (Search Appearance -> Content Types options).

On the other hand, you can use the Yoast SEO global settings to add company info, webmaster tools verification code etc. In order to find more information on how you should use the Yoast SEO plugin, please refer to the Yoast SEO Configuration Guide.
