Sometimes the Yoast SEO plugin doesn’t recognize the keyword is placed in certain locations and it says that the “keyword doesn’t appear” in such and such a place. Here’s an example. I will have the keyword in the alt text for a photo and the Yoast SEO plugin tells me it’s not there. Also, I will have the keyword in the first paragraph of the copy and the Yoast SEO plugin tell say it’s not there. I will go as far as copying and pasting the keyword from the “Focus keyword” box and the Yoast SEO plugin still won’t recognize that the keyword is there.

Any ideas as to why this would happen?

The Focus Keyword not in first paragraph usually happens when the first paragraph of text is not the first element in your article (i.e. there is an image before the first paragraph). Please, refer to this KB article for more information: https://kb.yoast.com/kb/warning-focus-keyword-not-in-first-paragraph/.

With regards to the Focus Keyword not in alt text warning, there could be multiple causes for this. We usually check the following:
    1. Check for conflicts.
    2. Check for JavaScript errors with your console.
If you find any JavaScript errors related to Yoast SEO or if there is a conflict with a plugin or a theme, you can create a new GitHub issue for our developers.

If you didn’t find any conflicts or errors, we think the issue is specific to your site. We’d need to investigate further but are unable to do so on these forums. You can purchase Yoast SEO Premium and receive our Premium email support and we can help you further.

Thanks Marcanor. Moving the photos after the paragraph worked!

As far as the alt text, I’ll have to do some more trouble shooting to see what the cause is. If a plugin conflict is the cause, is it possible search engines will still detect the keyword in the alt text even though the Yoast SEO plugin does not?

I will say this about the problem, it is intermittent and the vast majority of the time the keyword listed in the photo’s alt text is picked up.

@pasqualerose If it’s a plugin conflict, search engine won’t have any issue in order to crawl the alt text from the images.
