• I have seen dozens of threads relating to this but nothing that directly addresses my issues.

Due to outside reasons I had to move my site to a new host. We settled on GoDaddy’s Managed WordPress option and from there it has been “interesting”…

To start with, I am no longer an FTP – but rather a SFTP. User names, passowrds, ports etc. are all different from what I had before.

Now, I have uploaded the database from my old server, as well as the content folders. Any attempt to login is blocked with You do not have sufficient permissions to access this page.

I have been on tech support for 6 hours with GoDaddy around and around and around and it appears to be beyond them. The bizarre thing is, I cannot even set/change my permissions on the system for the wp-admin folder (which I have done in the past)

If it is simply a case of requiring me to delete and reinstall from scratch, I am more than happy to do that but would appreciate some advice on this.

    Thanks, Mike

  • I’d guess that you are not allowed to change file permissions on managed WP. And frankly, it seems pretty surprising that GoDaddy can’t figure this out – it’s THEIR server…

But let’s see if we can do anything on the WP site – what’s the site URL?

I hope this is what you are asking for

Okay, so try renaming your plugins folder and your active theme –

    wp-content
       plugins.HOLD

       themes
          Divi.HOLD

See if that makes any difference.

No, it just took my site offline and I still get the “…dont have permissions…” message

I renamed both at the same time – I presume this is what you wanted me to do rather than PI first, try then reactivate PI and try the Divi theme.

IOW, the 2013 theme did not come up. I just have a white page now for the .com and the wp-login.php page gets me the login prompt but right back to the same results page – no permissions

Yeah, both should be okay, but you do need to have a default theme in that theme folder – is Twenty Fifteen in that folder?

    Thread Starter Blitzburgh

    (@blitzburgh)

    Yes it is there

Hmm, okay, so try manually reinstalling WP – download a new copy to your computer and then replace all files and folders EXCEPT wp-content and wp-config.php. I kinda doubt this will work – in fact you may not be able to remove and then replace those given the permissions issue, but worth a try.

Be sure to delete the old copies before uploading the new ones.

Not sure if you are aware of this, but GD’s Managed WP allows you to easily migrate your existing site. I have done 3 so far, 2 from a GD shared Linux account and one from another host. All went smoothly and easily. For the one from the other host, I had to manually change the nameservers to the GD ones. The two sites from the other GD account were available in about 15 minutes and the third, from the other host, about an hour and a half, once the DNS change propagated. All you do is fill in your site’s user name and password for the WP login and your FTP account and sit back and wait ??

And yes, you cannot change permissions on a MWP account … that’s the “managed” part at work ??

I have been on tech support for 6 hours with GoDaddy around and around and around and it appears to be beyond them.

Given what Lyle just posted, the above seems even more unbelievable?

So to clarify – I am going to completely wipe the WP installation and reinstall on the GD site. Once completed, login with Dreamweaver and download all of those file to a new folder on my computer.

    Then I will upload the wp-content – wp-config and the database.sql?

(For the record, we did not upload the WP-CONFIG.PHP file last night as it was never asked for…)

Lyle, here is where it went to kabosh on me

The original host’s server (with my files) crashed and burned (motherboard)

We were down for days (weeks actually) and I finally had enough. We first selected a host (GoDaddy) then renamed the NS’s manually to point to the new servers at GD.

From there, we created WP on the server and waited for the old host to finally come back online. Once they did, I gathered up my files and uploaded them to my acct.

From there it went from catastrophe to just bad. ??

If I am to go back and do the auto, we are looking at hours – days possibly (depending on DNS propogation to rename them back to the original – as mine took the better part of a day to achieve)

In reality I would just like to simply login and go back to work, but this is daunting to say the least.

The thing to understand is that a Managed account is a totally different ‘animal’ than the usual shared plans, from GD or anyone else. It took me a while to figure this out too as the other plans are what I am used to.

The MWP is for a new install or migration from an existing, functioning site. It is NOT designed to be manually ‘tinkered’ with as shared hosting account are ?? Again, that’s the Managed part … security being one of the most important aspects, hence the permission change restriction.

Standby … I am trying a ‘manual import’ on my MWP account now ??

    Thread Starter Blitzburgh

    (@blitzburgh)

    Standing by…

Nope, didn’t work on this attempt ??

The database imported fine but the files upload didn’t go according to plan. I was trying to just upload the wp-content from my test site to the MWP install.

Going to try again but upload the complete install this time so will take a ‘tad’ longer. Will report back with the results ??

In the meantime, just to clarify:

    – you have a database export file from the former host?
    – you have all the site files from the former host?
