• I’m confused as to why all of a sudden one of the blogs I am managing has auto upgraded to 4.0 alpha.

I received an e-mail with the subject below at 01:16AM:
“Your site has updated to WordPress 4.0-alpha-20140508”

I received another one at 18:40PM this evening:
“Your site has updated to WordPress 4.0-alpha-20140508”
    followed by
    “Background updates have finished”

Yesterday all three of my WP installs auto upgraded to 3.9.1 (expected).
Only this one particular site has experienced this weird issue – I suspect it is *somehow* related to the 3.9.1 upgrade.

    Plug-ins I am using:
    – Business Hours
    – Disable Comments
    – Easy Restaurant Menu Manager
    – Jetpack by WordPress.com
    – WP Customer Reviews

  • Do you have the Beta Tester plugin installed?

Nope – only the plug-ins I have listed in my original post.

    Weird right?

Known issue. Are you using en-GB? There was a bug in that package that resulted in WP misidentifying itself as 4.0-alpha. You are actually running 3.9.1. The package was removed as soon as the bug was reported and has been (is being?) rebuilt. Just run the upgrade again to correct this.

Very weird! Doing a Google search for “wordpress 4.0 alpha” turns up some information; however, most everyone who experienced the 4.0 alpha update is using the Beta Tester plugin. Are you experiencing any issues related to the install? i.e. white pages, visual editor not working properly?

Edit Looks like @esmi solved it! Nice work.

Changed my permalinks on the dashboard for site wwww.reanalytics.com. This was MISTAKE, ERROR, DUMB move….now I cannot get into account WP-ADMIN to change them back. Have research forums and found suggestions. Looked in the config-php, function.php and did not find directory listing. Uploaded and review htaccess file and that made no difference. All I really need to do is to get into my WORDPRESS account…but do not see an approach…ANY IDEAS!!

Change the urls back. See Changing_The_Site_URL for details of how to do this correctly without logging in.

@esmi – I am running en-GB (I don’t know why or how I managed to download a localised build because my other two installs are just standard builds).

I have run the update again however it is still showing as 4.0, along with:
“You are using a development version of WordPress. You can update to the latest nightly build automatically or download the nightly build and install it manually”

I will try to run the update again tomorrow and update this thread!

I followed the instructions in this post and it looks like it may have solved the issue:
