    Hi,

One of my sites has just updated to an alpha release of WordPress 5.5.3:

Hi! Your site at https://www.xxxx.com has been updated automatically to WordPress 5.5.3-alpha-49449.

I have no idea why this has happened. The site auto updates to minor releases, but I have never added any code to update to the alpha releases. There is nothing new in wp-config.php or any beta testing plugin.

Akismet is installed but not enabled. Weird.

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

One of ours has just done this too. I was able to reinstall 5.5.1 in wp-admin thankfully, but it is worrying that an alpha release is being picked up as a stable release for updating.

Yeah same here, 4 of my sites on different hosting providers just updated to WordPress 5.5.3-alpha-49449.

    How do we fix this?

Happened here too. In fact, all sites now say “This site is set up to install updates of future beta versions automatically” after the recent update.

same here, 150 sites, glad to see other having the same issue so i know it’s not something i have done, but it says i have enable to be a BETA TESTER, but cannot find this setting, i assume this is a wordpress error? Not being a techie, but like someone just said, this version has kicked in as a stable release, which auto updates?

also, if you revert back to 5.5.1, surely the update will just kick back in?

    me too, what’s going on?

It seems I am not alone!

In the Update menu I selected to re-install version 5.5.1. The rollback seems to have worked ok. This is clearly not normal update behaviour though, and undermines trust in auto-updates.

Do you have the beta test plugin installed? See https://i.imgur.com/ytfUv37.png

If so, disable it and then go to dashboard->updates and “reinstall” wordpress.

Same problem and I have a lot of sites to manage.

The “beta testing” plugin has never been installed!

Not sure if this is related, but I now have the Akismet Anti-Spam plugin suddenly appear in the plugins menu. Installed but not activated. I did not install this plugin.

    me too…

    I have the same problem.
My sites automatically updated to 5.5.2 on Oct 29.
On Oct 30 I received a message that they have updated to WordPress 5.5.3-alpha-49449.
I have never installed a beta testing plugin

    1) I do not want to be part of alpha or beta testing and I do not want to receive alpha/beta updates. How do I unsubscribe

    2) Do I need to re-install 5.5.1 (which is an option on my dashboard)? What about the update to 5.5.2 that happened on Oct 29?

Please, no more “me, too” posts. Keep an eye on the trac ticket.
