Since WordPress 5.2 there is a built-in feature that detects when a plugin or theme causes a fatal error on your site, and notifies you with this automated email.

In this case, WordPress caught an error with one of your plugins, Wordfence Security.

    Error Details
    =============
An error of type E_ERROR was caused in line 200 of the file /#/public_html/wp-content/plugins/wordfence/modules/login-security/classes/controller/wordfencels.php. Error message: Uncaught Error: Class ‘WordfenceLS\Controller_CAPTCHA’ not found in /#/public_html/wp-content/plugins/wordfence/modules/login-security/classes/controller/wordfencels.php:200

    #4 /#/public_html/wp-login.php(1056): login_header(‘Log In’, ”, Object(WP_Error))

    thrown

/#/ is my website home directory which I have hidden from this post. I’m not sure what the exact cause is but may be an issue with Wordfence worth investigating.

    Thank you.

  • Hey @nhedayati,

    Thanks for reporting this.

This looks like it might be a WordPress plugin update that didn’t go well. Can you please try reinstalling Wordfence and let me know if it helps?

    https://www.wordfence.com/help/advanced/remove-or-reset/

Please note that if you use the Wordfence Assitant approach you’ll still need to manually remove the tables below. In the next Wordfence Assistant release, these tables will be added.

    wfls_settings
    wfls_2fa_secrets

Please let me know how it goes.

    Thanks,

    Gerroald

    Hi @WFGerroald,

One of our client sites was down for almost 10hrs last night due to the same error as well. Although we have Wordfence (WF) on the site for a couple months now and for all of sudden the error just breaks the site.

Is this error happen when WF plugin trying to update itself and failed or WF just throwing the error when other plugins update failed? Is this error related to the plugins update at all? Can you confirm this?

This is very important to us because we have Wordfence on all of our client sites and many of them have WF premium as well.

    Thanks
    Minh

@ducminhn, If you need support then per the forum guidelines please start your own topic.

A lot more people will see your post, and that way you stand a good chance of getting the assistance you want. Despite any similarity in symptoms, your issue is likely to be completely different because of possible differences in physical servers, accounts, hosts, plugins, theme, configurations, etc. Thus one problem, on one setup is not indicative of the functionality and reliability of an application as a whole.

@wfgerald hello and thank you for your quick reply.

I have followed your recommendation and done a fresh install of Wordfence on the affected site.

I can’t replicate the fatal error so can’t say if this fixed my issue but so far I can’t see any problems.

If I get any more automated emails with similar errors I will let you know.

Big thank you to you and your team for producing one of the best WP plugins out there.

    Have a good weekend.

    Hey @nhedayati,

Thanks for the update, and happy to hear it!

Also, thanks for the kind words. We take a lot of pride in what we do here, and it’s always nice to get great feedback about Wordfence.

Please let us know if anything else comes up.

    Thanks,

    Gerroald
