    Hello,

I have a error in my GSC related to my sitemap.

    Problem: Sitemap is HTML.
Description: Your Sitemap appears to be an HTML page. Please use a supported sitemap format instead.

My sitemap is just automaticly generated with this plugin and has a .xml extension (sitemap.xml). Why is Google saying its HTML?

GSC shows 2 URL’s in the error report:

    – /sitemap-posttype-post.2017.xml
    – /sitemap-posttype-post.2018.xml

How can i fix this issue?

    Thank you!

  • Hi, it might be a redirect or conflict with another plugin or even the hosting environment. If you can share a link to your sitemap I can take a closer look.

Does your main sitemap index look OK? Can you follow the links in that index and do you get redirected to a non XML type page or do you see an error message?

You could try to set the option “Split by: None” for your post on Settings > XML Sitemap. This will attempt replace the two yearly post sitemaps by one large one on /sitemap-posttype-post.xml … Maybe this one does not generate an error ?

    Hey Ravan!

Can i send the URL to you by email? Or is there another way to send it? I dont want the URL out here in the forum. Thank you.

Btw, when i click on sitemap-posttype-post.2018.xml and 2017 it brings me straight to the homepage. I think thats not a good thing, right? When i click on pages, it brings me to all my pages.

Well, there’s your problem. Your homepage is not what the spider wants ??

This redirect is usually a problem with a conflicting option in the Yoast SEO plugin settings. Do you have WordPress SEO?by Yoast installed and activated? The XML Sitemap & Google News can run beside that plugin but it needs the Date Archives to be actived in the Yoast settings… If it’s correct, you will have had a warning message about it at the top of your admin pages. If you go to Settings > XML Sitemap then you can use the button “Check for conflicts” on the right to recheck for this conflict. It will tell you what to do next.

If it’s not the Yoast SEO plugin, then please send your sitemap URL via the contact form on https://status301.net/contact/ and tell me what other plugins you are using. The redirect must come from somewhere…

I get it. I dont have Yoast installed. I emailed you!

Ah, good you mention that because your long mail was sent straight to spam by Akismet ??

Indeed, as you mention in the mail, SEOPress might be at play here. I read a topic https://www.ads-software.com/support/topic/date-archive-not-working/ where the date archives are redirected by SEOPress, or at least appear to be. Not sure if that is intentionally. Do you know if there is an option in SEOPress to “disable date archives” or similar?

    (@claitonlord)

Mmmm I see. This are the options in SEOPress: https://i66.tinypic.com/ifa0ly.jpg

I set out a support ticket at SEOPress. I use the PRO version. I also think SEOPress is in play here. Curious. I will let you know Ravan.

Hmmm, don’t see the option there in the screen print but in the SEOPress changelog from 5/11 on https://www.seopress.org/changelog/ I read “FIX Disable date archives”… So it seems intentional, even if there is no option for it.

I’ll investigate further and do a local little test setup with the free SEOPress version ??

Tried the free SEOPress and see no option to “Disable date archives”. Strange… But it also does not do this date archive redirect by default so I wonder if it’s related to SEOPress at all.

Question: why not use the XML Sitemap that comes with SEOPress?

Ah, no… found it. The option is buried on Titles & Metas, on the Archives tab in the Date Archives section. Deactivate the option “Déactivate date archives” –counter-intuitive ?? — save and it should be OK ??

    (@claitonlord)

Hey Ravan! Thanks for taking time out!

I Deactivated the ‘data archives’ and now its showing me all the URL’s again. I deleted the sitemap in GSC and added it again. The error is still there though. I guess Google has to crawl my sitemap again for the error to dissappear?

The reason i dont use the sitemap feature in SEOPress ia because i dont like the Google News sitemap function. It didnt show me any details, like language, date of publication and if there is a image included. The feature is just there, without any valuable additions. On the other side, you are an experienced sitemap developer, with new updates coming regularly. And its lightweight. So i just stick with yours ??

Btw, you also do SEO/website/pagespeed optimazation?

Hi Stijn, thanks for the feedback and helping me find this incompatibility. There will be an admin warning message in the next release (currently in the development version on Github) when this conflicting settings is detected ??

I do site audits and optimizations from time to time but it’s not my core business. Still, if you cannot find a good expert, you can always contact me and we can continue in Dutch ??

You’re very welcome Ravan. This way we only make the plugin better. Great update! Many people will benefit from it.

Ahaa I see. Let me email you. I will use the contact form. See you on the other side.
