Hi! I’ve ran into a strange problem today. Was creating a new blogpost where I wanted to appear a YouTube video. Usually I just paste a YouTube link and it magically pops into a video, that didn’t work now.

I checked the video, tried to insert/embed another video (in case the one I chose had restrictions), disabled all plug-ins (even removed the plug-in folder after that) and switched to the default theme, but no difference.

The only thing I found out that when I use the [embed] shortcode, I get the display I usually get when inserting a video, but with an error that the video can’t be loaded.

I published a blogpost with several YouTube videos last week. When I open that post in the WordPress editor, the videos just display fine. Strange is that when I tried to paste the video link there, it does convert to a video, but not every time.

I’m really stuck at this issue. Searched all over the internet but haven’t found any solution. Because of the failed-error, I should think of some kind of connection error, but can’t find out what. Even tried to delete my .htaccess file, but no difference. So it’s not in one of my plug-ins, or theme, or .htaccess.

Really hope anyone can help me out with this!

  • Hello Estrella,

Did you try to use “text” view instead of default view when pasting youtube embed code? (and save post)

    Good luck,

Yep, tried that. It gives me just a plain text link. Forgot to mention that de video isn’t displaying back-end and front-end. When I try the embed code which gives an error in the admin, it displays as a link on the site itself.

    Ok Estrella,

Back-end is normal, videos never appear back-end (but a large square).
On Front-end not normal at all, now every template should be able to show a simple youtube embed video.

Can you try to switch theme, what happens please?

    Thank you

Well, normally my videos do appear back-end. See the screenshot. This ia a post from september 18th.

When I try to switch theme, there’s no difference at all.

Small update: Just tried a Vimeo link, which converts to video right away. This is getting stranger and stranger… The functionality seems to work, but is kind of selective…

Tried the auto-embed feature for an Instagram photo and Vine video as well. Converts immediately to respectively a photo and video. So the issue seems to be with YouTube videos.

In that case, I find it strange that older posts with videos inserted in the same way, still do display. If there would be any kind of connection trouble, those other video’s wouldn’t display as well.

    Any suggestions?

I’m totally puzzled, thanks for the screenshot – I never saw that on any back-end I setup.

Could be your host problem, maybe limiting or blocking bandwith from YouTube, this is possible but strange.
Last week we had similar problems with Vimeo too.

Maybe a silly suggestion, this could be related to the way WP does process video embed codes. Which could explain differences between new and old posts.

Do you use autoplay feature on YT embed code?

To be discussed, personally I have no trouble with any kind of video – AWS host,

I was thining about a hosting issue as well. Will contact them tomorrow anyway. I always use the same way for inserting YouTube video’s.

Just pasting the YouTube video link in the post, no iframe or embed or other shortcodes as well. I just love the way WP makes it simple to insert video’s without having to add any code.

The video’s in the older post have been inserted in exactly the same way as I try to insert one now.

About the videos displaying in the backend. It’s always been this way. I do not use any plug-in which causes this. Even with all plug-ins disabled, I still can see video’s in the way that shows in the screenshot.

By the way, my site URL is https://estrellaweb.nl.

The ‘older’ posts with YouTube video’s working normal in it, is this one: https://estrellaweb.nl/2015/09/momentopname-092015/. The post which I am editing is planned for tomorrow, so not visible yet for the public. ??

Added a test post where I tried to add a YouTube link. The normal way I used to do it (just paste a link) and underneath one with embed code. As you see, the normal link stays as plain text, the one with embed shortcode displays as a usual href link.

    Ok thanks for the input!

What happens if you use an iframe style YouTube video?
I think this is a conflict between theme or Jetpack, and video embedding.

    Nice blog by the way,

(in general the old style iframe for youtube is more reliable)

    Thread Starter Ester Dammers

    (@rebelstar)

Well, the issue still occurs when I have disabled all plug-ins AND switched to the default theme at the same time. So that can not be the case. ?? I have been using Jetpack all the time. ?? Thanks for the compliment!

When I try to add the video within an iframe, it does work. But I always have been using the pasted-link-turns-into-video option and it frustrates me that it’s not working for YT videos now. Plus it’s more time expensive.

Glad to know YouTube iframe works for you too ??

Well, then 3 comments to conclude:
    – I guess it’s because of some code problem at some point (maybe your theme use a framework that i don’t use)
    – at least you can show YouTube videos now without trouble (same with other videos – iframe is in general more reliable)
    – i only understand prima and “hoe gaat het ermee” in nederlands so good luck with blog ??

    Have fun with WP,

Thanks again for your reply! Well, I made a fresh try this morning with inserting a few video links to a post and got surprised to see it’s working again. The video I initially wanted to insert is still doing nothing (maybe some restrictions?), but other video links convert to a video right away.

I did try to insert other videos yesterday, just to close out things, but I guess it’s been some kind of a server hick-up. So everything is back to normal again, except for the fact that my Instagram widget stopped doing it’s slideshow, but that’s something for another topic. ??

Nice you understand some Dutch. Heel leuk!

Thanks for your kind help again!
