I love the TwentySeventeen theme, its the best yet!

I have trouble getting Youtube video to work across all environments though.
The video load works great on PC’s and macs and of course it uses the static image on mobile phone (by design), but on the IPad in the horizontal mode using either chrome or safari browser it looks like hell. Not sure if its a IPad problem, Youtube problem or even a WordPress problem.

You can see the result at the home page of:

When I say result, i mean unless you are using an Ipad in horizontal mode you will not see the problem, as it works beautifully in all other environments.

Can you provide a screenshot of the problem so we know what to look out for when replicating the issue?

Obviously there is a large grey bar on the RHS and the header video will not auto-play. Sometimes you cannot even hit the play button.

Could you also let us know the version of iPad that this issue occurs in?

From testing so far, it looks like the following devices – anything that is 9.7 inches, but not a pro:

    The iPad Air (5th Gen)
    iPad Mini (1st Generation Mini)
    iPad (3rd Generation)
    iPad 2 (2nd Generation)
    iPad (1st Generation)

I am sure other ipads suffer from the same problem, i just don’t have access to every model.

Different generations use different versions of Safari and Chrome. I would expect issues in older versions of those browsers for old generations.

If this is a problem with your audience you may have to consider hiring someone because supporting old browsers is very time consuming.

All these units have the latest Version of IOS loaded (9.3.5). The browsers are up to date, so I think you are saying its a hardware issue? I could do with a test of a brand new ipad and ipad mini, I am heading to the Apple Store right now to test and will post results and photos.

I think it’s a browser problem, but Apple rolls out certain versions of browsers with certain iOS version.

Edit: Oh I see you updated the iOS. Can you find out which browser versions have the issue for Safari and Chrome?

OK, just back from the Apple store.
All ipads new and old, on every flavor, every OS, every browser all have the same problem. No problems at all on the iphone, Android, imac or PC – just ALL the ipads have the problem. I have some screen shots of all the ipads with the same problem, but they look just the same as the image i have already supplied, slightly different variations for each, but the same basic error.

I’m struggling to replicate the problem on your site, is there any more information you can provide on the steps to replicate? Would you also be able to provide the browser version of Safari and Chrome?

    Hi Andrew,

Its pretty a straightforward problem replication. You use any ipad in horizontal mode and just go to the homepage of nycvb.com, thats it.

What ipad are you using, specially configured? As all my test ipads and every ipad at the Apple store suffers from the error, so it shouldn’t be hard to replicate, perhaps that is the reason for the oversight in the first place, the testing platform is non-standard? I assume you are testing using a real ipad, not a simulator?

To answer your question, my current test ipad is IOS 9.3.5 with Safari 604.1, but its still all ipad browsers across the entire ipad range. The whole store full of ipads at Apple and every old ipad I could lay my hands on shows the same problem, so i am bemused how you found one ipad that does not have the problem. Tell me its a real ipad and not a simulator?

I’m using a service called Browserstack that uses real iPads and haven’t been able to replicate the issue on a variety of devices,

Ha ha, that would be it. Grab a “real” ipad and see the error, nothing like a simulator to give a false reading.

I believe you, but as a volunteer I’m doing the best I can. It sounds like you may need to hire someone to resolve this. Please try https://jobs.wordpress.net/ or https://jetpack.pro/ and do not accept any hire offers posted to these forums.

Hi Andrew, didn’t realize you are just a volunteer. Yes we would like someone to solve this – but if we get the solution, who makes the change/update to the theme?
