Zero info on new ownership

  • Hi. At https://www.ads-software.com/plugins/backupwordpress/ it says the plugin is now under new ownership, yet there’s nothing about Xibo and the user @xibodevelopment was created only days ago.

    There’s no info about the change at https://bwp.hmn.md/, licenses there are still being sold, and we don’t even know if Xibo refers to xibomarketing[.]com (which is almost empty), xibo.org.uk or some other entity.

    With all the recent cases of WP plugins bought by shady companies to add malware to users’ websites, upgrading my clients’ websites to 3.7 has me worried.

    Could @katmoody or @humanmade provide some confirmation and -if possible- some background info?

    In the plug-in description they recommend another plug-in called “UpdraftPlus WordPress Backups”. On the page they are linking to, the footer says:

    “Product development and marketing in co-operation with XIBO Ltd, Cardiff, UK.”

    Searching for “XIBO Ltd, Cardiff, UK” leads you to xibomarketing.com, which has very little information, though.

    Furthermore, the plug-in description now links to a comparison of BackUpWordPress and UpdraftPlus WordPress Backups:

    The rating for BackUpWordPress is very bad, it lacks all features that UpdraftPlus offers. Why would you link to such a comparison if you were maintaining BackUpWordPress?

    To me, it seems like they bought the plug-in to get rid of a competitor.

    Hi – Thank you for your good questions and apologies for lack of information so far – we’re working on putting out more info.

    But rest assured XIBO Ltd is a reputable company and employer established in the UK almost 10 years ago. We started in conferences, hence why our website is not relevant. Our new BackupWordPress website is not ready yet.

    We’re a British company Like HumanMade (the previous owners of BWP) and Simbahosting Ltd (the company behind UpdraftPlus) and have worked with both of them. It is true that many of the support requests for BackupWordPress are related to restoring and backing up to remote storage, which UpdraftPlus does for free and so we will occasionally recommend switching where we think it may solve the issue.

    However, we have been actively providing support to users of BackupWordPress since taking over this week, and will be maintaining it as it’s a well-loved plugin. The project is here and we’ll be reviewing any open source merge requests: https://github.com/xibodevelopment

    Concerning the premium add-ons, according the HumanMade sales have slowed significantly and we’re unsure it’s worth continuing to sell and develop them. Please let us know your thoughts at [email protected]
