    Since multiple versions I have a problem with Zotpress not showing my data but just spinning wheels, this happens on the WordPress frontend and the backend. This happened since v6 update. The strange thing is that the same library works ok on another site with same theme and mostly the same plugins. Now I reset Zotpress, reinstalled it but still no success ??
    In Firefox I get the following error:

    SyntaxError: JSON.parse: unexpected character at line 1 column 1 of the JSON data
    m.parseJSON()
    load-scripts.php:5
    e.parseJSON()
    load-scripts.php:8

    load-scripts.php:2

    Hope this helps…

    Haven’t seen this before, so please contact me with your api id and key, the theme you’re using, and your shortcodes: https://katieseaborn.com/contact

    Thanks Katie,

    Currently the problematic site is protected by Sucuri firewall so I will try to move it first to make sure that this is not the cause of the problem and will then contact you. Theme is UX Flatsome: https://flatsome.uxthemes.com/
    The strange thing is that the spinning wheel also appears on the backend where the theme should not be affecting things IMHO. On the other hand, another site works ok with the same library, same Zotpress login and plugins enabled.
    I will come back to you soon.

    I have a feeling it’s the firewall, since Zotpress relies on taking in information from an external website (Zotero) and firewalls tend not to like that.

    Hi again!

    It was not the firewall, after moving the site to a non-firewalled domain I started disabling every plugin and finally found out that the non-ending spinning wheel problem is caused by the Envato WordPress Toolkit plugin:
    https://github.com/envato/envato-wordpress-toolkit
    This plugin is widely used for auto-updating Envato marketplace (Themeforrest) themes. I expected everything but not this one…

    The plugin is on github – you can download the zip and install it by copying to the WP plugins directory. Maybe you can easily find out which part is actually causing the strange error.

    I have the same issue, spinning wheels instead of citations. It worked time ago, but suddenly the spinning wheels appeared. I don’t know when exactly. I tested deactivating the rest of plugins, but the issue persisted.
    The url is https://openwam.webs.upv.es and I am using the last version of wordpress and the last version of the plugin.

    @paco I’m just seeing a Parallels test page. It’s possible it’s the theme rather than a plugin. Also, if you’re using in-text shortcodes, you do require the in-text bibliography now (previously it was not required).

    I think that the theme is not the problem. I also can see a spinning wheel if I go to Dashbodar->Zotpress->Browse

    Are you sure your site meets the requirements, particularly HTTP request method supported by WordPress enabled on your server: cURL, fopen with Streams (PHP 5), or fsockopen. In your server config file, X-Frame-Options should be set to SAMEORIGIN.

    What happens when you first load Zotpress and it tests these? Do you get the green light?

    Now it works … I have reset zotpress, and I have configure the account again. I don’t now why it didn’t work. I have use exactly the same data to configure the account.

    Thanks for your help.

    Hmm, odd, but glad it’s working!

    I have to open this thread all over again, because I have a similar problem. My site is also behind a firewall and is an intranet. So, I wouldnt be able to provide you the link to the site itself.

    I should also mention, I am using the polytechnic theme from themeforest. The site is configured as multisite wordpress and the plugin Zotpress runs only in one of them.

    I tried to uninstall and reinstall the plugin, reset the plugin using the button in “Options” page. Neither seemed to fix the issue like it was suggest earlier. Aslo while adding accounts, the account configuration worked perfectly (green light blinked… ?? )

    Thanks in advance for your help.

    It might be because you’re behind a firewall. Zotpress needs to take information from external websites and it may be blocked. Check with your admin to see if you can make an exception in the firewall for this.

    Hi Katie!

    Is there any chance that you have a look at the non-ending spinning wheel problem caused by the Envato WordPress Toolkit plugin:
    https://github.com/envato/envato-wordpress-toolkit
    As I mentioned above, this plugin is widely used for auto-updating Envato marketplace (Themeforrest) themes and it is causing the spinning wheels conflict. It is really annoying to have to enable/disable the plugin every time to make Zotpress work.

    Thanks in advance.
