When a user clicks on the link to download a file (i.e. https://domain.com/download/file/2374/) i would like to hook in before the download is returned to apply my own check.

You upload protected files in an own directory, so this thumbs could be uploaded and generated in the same protected directory, not? This way they would be protected and the admin could identify the uploads better.

Basically, the image expands to max possible with of the container and the height adapts accordingly.
This way there is no need to set fix height or % for each breakpoint.
