For those of you who STILL DON’T GET IT and still post messages that you don’t have spam, then I envy you. Obviously, your web site traffic is so low that spammers will not bother your Blog because your web traffic has too few readers. But, if you have a highly popular web site with a Blog, then you will find spammers to be your worst nightmare.
Since joining this group a month ago, I have appreciated all the suggestions previously given me and have tried them all, but none have stopped the Texas Hokem “Choke ’em” spammer. Requiring a password to post, or requiring that messages be moderated, renaming files, changing user access, or even adding hundreds of words to the Blacklist, to name just a few, have not blocked the Texas Hokem Choke ’em online casino gambling spammer. Unfortunately, taking the time to delete yesterday’s 500 spam messages from the painfully slow MySql database will take all night. I just don’t want to devote my web site time to blocking spammers. Surely there must be some sort of reverse spam assault we could launch at these gambling and porn web sites that do not let up for a second.
If anyone has any “new” ideas, please feel free to share them with me.

As for the reply to the note above – this sounds like a joke! Don’t believe it! They make money by dumping their advertising all over your web site!
I have posted concerns here previously regarding the Texas Hokem or “Choke ’em” which is what I’d like to do to this spammer. I have tried all your suggestions but today, he attempted to post 500 more messages about online gambling. However, one of his messages hit a snag and the 500 messages would not post, though they are clogging the MySql database. I have appreciated everyone’s comments – I have used word blocks, set the board to “moderation” only for all messages, but none of this works or even stops spammers. In fact, none of anyone’s suggested blocks have worked. You can check it out at https://www.abduct.com/wordpress/index.php. If you click on the 45 comments, you can scroll to the bottom and see where Texas choked on the script which prevented the 500 spams from posting.
My second concern is how to TURN OFF the HTML functions which these spammers need. I do not want them crashing thru and then posting messages with active blue hyperlinks. Does anything work? I am doubtful because so far requiring users to have a login and password, or using the blacklist, or requiring all messages to be moderated, etc., has not worked at all. They can do anthing around me.

I was the original poster to this thread. I tried many of the suggestions mentioned here to block Texas Hokem or “Texas Choke ’em” as I refer to him. Meanwhile, Texas Choke ’em keeps setting up 3 or 4 new web sites daily to get around the WP-Blacklist.
Early on, I turned off user registration, file uploading, etc. However, today an unregistered user posted a comment under my name as “Admin” and then complained to me about the Blog situation. It was one of my former bulletin board members, and not Texas Hokem. So this program is still very weak on security.
Throughout all this, Texas Hokem has continued posting daily, even though he is not a registered user. I tried the 2 scripts suggested by Wellardsworld, but they did not stop him. I tried changing the name of the Comments file and some of the others, but that did not stop Texas-Hokem. I installed and updated WP-Blacklist to block his various new URLs, but that did not stop him. Then I manually added various words, such as “Texas” or “Poker” into the Blacklist script, but this has not stopped Texas-Hokem!
I know some of you feel safe because you have not been spammed again, but that only means he has not been back. I recently turned off my very popular main bulletin board because it received 1,500 spams in 10 days and created thousands of open HTTP connections which caused the server company to threaten me with much higher monthly rates due to all the traffic created by “Texas Choke ’em”.
I am still experimenting to see what works and am open to your ideas. A DoS attack sounds like a good idea for “Texas Choke ’em”, but I would not do a re-direct to Google. It would make more sense to do a re-direct back to one the “Texas Choke ’em” web sites.

Good question. I checked and it was a comment that had not shown up in the database, so I read it in the Blog first. However, unlike yesterday, there was no registration to accompany that post as there was yesterday, where every online poker or Texas hokem spam had a matching registration.
Experimentally, I have changed the wp_options to in the MySql database to “No” for “users_can_register” and “use_fileupload.” I had initially turned these off in the WP Admin window, but after a crash weekend of learning about this program, have realized its flimsy Admin controls do not work at all, and that the settings do not seem to change the MySql database which only seems to be set if I make the changes manually.

    Hi Wellardsworld,
I tried your various modified WP files and they almost worked. I liked your formatting and layout visually better.
But today, the spammers bypassed the registration process and posted anyway. Then when I went to myPhpAdmin to delete their phony registrations and postings – they were not there! But their postings for more online gambling were on the Blog. Yikes! Am I losing it? Now I am wondering whose DB their junk got posted to, unless it is one of my earlier MySql Databases which should not be accessible because there are no more WP files linked to it?

I did not sign up for Blogexplosion but the new Blog is getting spammed by Texas Holdem, Et Al anyway. According to my MySQL database, the bot did not register for a password, so now I can’t block the Bot, and will have to manually delete. What a royal nuisance. Not sure if the Blog is worth keeping. In my opinion, this is a critical weakness for Word Press, because any of us with Blogs could accidentally end up hosting a free message service for gambling casinos, pornography, or terrorists who could use our Blogs to transmit their messages around the world.
