Thank you for all that. ?? I will get there eventually. Just found the config option in my user reg plugin where I can edit the message they get. So now it says to email admin. I’ve been wanting that for yonks. Now I will simply only approve those who email me. Simple. ??

I switched to 20 19 after deactivating all plugins. The deactivation didn’t help. So I switched. Got a different screen for activate new users and only my most recent attempt was there. One I made this morning. Yesterday’s two failed attempts didn’t show in pending at all.

So I clicked activate ( or approve or whatever it is) and it worked fine. Thanks a lot. ?? I’ll now switch back to 2017 and try installing plugins as you suggest.

Thanks again. I guess that’s a sort of standard basic methodology for trouble shooting?

Okay, thanks for that. You know testing the operatin of your site re new user registrations seems to require coming up with a new username/email address every time you have ‘another go at it’ which I find a bit of a drag and a problem.

Is there really an easier way?

Very lovely. Thank you very much. What an excellent heap of solutions. I think that ftp will suit me best. I might try them all just for the fun of it. ??

Well I think that User screen is standard wordpress isn’t it?

It has nothing on it to tell me what it is, if it is not standard. I went to the ‘help’ and it just talked as though it was standard wordpress.

    I have these plugins:

    User Verification
    New User Approve
    Inactive User Deleter
    Bulk Delete

Perhaps I am going about it all the wrong way. Could I ask you how you deal with this problem?

    ??

Thanks for that. I deactivated that plugin. Don’t know why it was activated, it’s not the one that is doing the work. For the buttons remained after deactivating it.

Apparently it is ‘sharethisshare’ buttons addon that’s doing the job. I’ve just been playing with it but I can’t get it to stop putting two buttons for every choice. Ah well.

But what fixed it was was switching off that editor. The ‘classic editor’ plugin. That’s not really fixing it is it? It’s avoiding it. But good enough.

I don’t do much. I can make do with this editor, today’s standard.

So I guess that’ll do it. Thanks for your help. Much appreciated. ??

Hi… and thanks. Yep, the url would be

    https://abrogard.com/blog/2023/11/19/the-youth-of-today/

and the line i’ve written ‘this text meant to be bold’

To be clear: it IS bold when I edit. But as soon as I ‘publish’ or ‘update’ it loses it.

Thank you for that. How stupid of me ! Seems I cannot edit it now, either.

So here is the correct link: [ moved to link field ]

I tried to insert that as a link but it didn’t take. Didn’t show at all.

thanks for that. what’s ‘too many’ ? i rarely write anything and I”m just thinking when I do make a new post, a new ‘article’, they should get a notification of that. Isn’t that what everyone does? How could you be giving ‘too many’ ? By writing too much? Like if you wrote every day? I can see that. I wouldn’t do it if that were the case. Or even if I wrote very regularly once a week, say. I’d expect they’d know. what do you use, can I ask you that?

I don’t know that I’m putting it too clearly. What I’m talking about is that sometimes a sort of intro page opens that shows people what it is all about – but still needs to be clicked on to get there.
Other times the link simply remains there as a link needing to be click on.
I am trying to understand and control that behaviour.
I thought for a while it was because of configurational differences across my sites but I’ve got a couple of examples here, one each way, both from the same site:

    didn't

    hmm. I see I can’t edit.

Ah well. No, it didn’t behave well. Those last two bullet points are not from the source.

You can see what I’ve done there. I’ve ended and written ‘and it goes on’ and then I’ve provided a link.

It’s bulleted that link as part of a series of bullet points.

I don’t want that. Whether I want it or not the point is: how to stop it happening?
Stop all the auto bulleting would be fine by me.

    Thread Starter abrogard

    (@abrogard)

    the bullets in the document.
now I look at it again maybe it’s not as wrong as I thought.

It has taken that first para without a bullet, that’s good.
That’s the “The peer reviewed journal…’ para.

Then it has bulleted the links beneath.
Well they may have been there in the source document.

In which case I’m complaining about nothing. I wanted the bullets IT was putting in to stop at that ‘peer reviewed’ para and I’ve seen those bullets beneath it and thought they haven’t…

    but maybe they have…

Sorry if I’m all in error…

Thank you for that. I was lazy writing the numbers, reading them and repeating them – I have 5.5.1, it is up to date.

I’ll contact 3ix about the PHP extension.

A little more about the problem – I think all the posts that I can’t edit have links in them to other sites. Could that be the cause?

p.s. I just noticed something else. In the editor just now I got no error message but I got no text I did see some faint wavy red lines. The same lines you see when a spell checker is underlining words it thinks are wrong.

so the system thinks it is displaying the text I suppose. is there some switch somewhere where somehow it’s got text display set to white and that’s why I can’t see any?

    edit a few minutes later:

it has all come good. it’s okay. I deactivated WP User and WP Full Page and now it works. I was just staring at the blank edit screen and suddenly the text popped up. After that anywhere I go the text pops up. I guess the delay was something about the software promulgating my changes.

Okay. Thanks for the help. Hope this little story is some help in the future to someone, somewhere. ??

Thank you for all the suggestions and the links. I’ll be busy tracking it all down and updating my site…

Agree. If you’re the sole-user of your site, blocking all IPs, but your own from non-public areas is the easiest way to go.

Well that’s how it is but though I don’t want a hectic hundreds of people type thing I’d like to envisage a time when a few people visited and commented, participated…

I often feel the desire to comment when I visit a good blog (or a bad one)…

So it will be nice if I can get it all under control somehow.

    ??

p.s. but on second reading I think I’ve misread what you’ve said. I’ve read it as blocking every newcomer: no commenters. But that’s not exactly what you’ve said.

These people are not leaving comments, for the most part, over 90%, they just try to register an account. Would what you’re suggesting work on that somehow?
