Thank you Ethan. Your reply is much appreciated. I already use the recaptcha and it is very effective at spam prevention. It does nothing at all to reduce prank emails though. I think the tykes actually get a kick out of the recaptcha – sometimes the prank emails say “I am a robot ha ha”. Anyway I solved – or at least greatly reduced – the problem by putting a COPPA page in front of the contact page. Marking as resolved. Thanks again for your response and for the great plugin.

+1 for cache and +another 1 for CloudFlare.

Any caching plugin is a good start. If your host offers a server-side cache like Varnish or Litespeed that’s the way to go. Otherwise I like Comet Cache. There are other good choices including those JNashHawkins mentioned.

CloudFlare is awesome, has a free tier, and improves both security and speed, especially if you use a cache-everything page rule. No plugin needed.

Thank you Joy. I put a snippet in wp-config.php so that my sites auto-update both major and minor releases as well as plugins and themes. My question is whether I can auto-update the db as well, when the WP update requires it.

Have you checked with your host? They may have a backup.

Any chance you are using CloudFlare Rocket Loader? That freezes my sliders sometimes, although lately it has been behaving better. Other javascript accelerators may cause problems too.

I have not used WordFence in awhile but I seem to recall it will block logins by specific username.

Or … You could try using a CloudFlare page rule to block bad login bots at the reverse proxy so they don’t even hit your server. This is what I use …
*mysite.com/wp-login*
Browser Integrity Check: On, Security Level: I’m Under Attack, Cache Level: Bypass

If you’re out of page rules a firewall rule should also work. I have not done it this way but I think it would be something like (again – I have not tested this) …
