1. No, I was not publishing or editing any posts/pages at the time. I am curious if a plugin or if Divi was causing frequent publishing behind the scenese, but I’m not sure. The only possibility I can think of is refreshing pages on the front end while logged in. But I was mainly using incognito windows, not logged in, to check, and I could watch the files get deleted in an SFTP client.
2. I tried several combinations of garbage collection settings. I set the expiry time to like 10 days, and tried setting garbage collection to 0 to disable or tried 86000 seconds.

I have switched to W3 Total Cache at least for the time being, and I’m not experiencing similar problems.

I don’t know if I will be able to investigate this further.

Adding: I’m using a 2010 child theme.

I see. Perhaps I gave bad advice. It seems you can only use structure tags in the permalinks. The example I was thinking of when answering set up just one tag on the entire site called “news” and used /%tag%/%postname%/ so that every URL was like: example.com/news/post-name

Interesting that %postname% and the category links work, but the others don’t. Perhaps someone who knows the .htaccess file a bit better than I do would be able to help out.

Do you still get errors if you change the permalink settings to what they were previously?

This post might help. Also, if you have an established blog with a lot of links from other sites pointing to your posts, it might not be worth the trouble to change the links, because you would also want to add redirects from the old URLs to the new ones.

You can accomplish this from your Permalinks Settings page. Use a custom structure for posts like /articles/%postname%/, and articles as the category base.

You’ll probably have more luck with the Studio Press forums, but I believe the XML file comes in the child theme folder, not the Genesis folder. If you look there, you should find it.

Then you can follow these instructions to import the sample data into your WordPress install.

Thanks, tarifs. This worked for me, but my theme sets up categories a little bit differently, so I had to adjust.
