to add to this point, this misbehaviour of network_site_url( ) also breaks links to the network admin area, they point to:
https://www.example.com/wp-admin/network
instead of
https://www.example.com/wordpress/wp-admin/network
Waiting for a fix I added a filter to network_site_url.
