Is the pingback functionality inside wordpress itself, or is it a theme thing?
Where could I look further into the issue to find out, waht the problem causes? Any logfiles or so?

no, I have no security plugins installed.
After several updates of wordpress and my theme (minimalgrid) the still do not work ??

btw:
Why don’t we need pingbacks anymore? I often have follow-ups to my blogposts, and want my readers to be able to proceed to the newer parts after opening the first post of a story.

A further comment: this behavior occurs with Firefox 14.
