Try deactivating plugins one by one and check if this error goes away. I had the similar issue. When I deactivated BWP Google XML Sitemaps plugin, it went away. When I had BWP Google XML Sitemaps activated, my admin settings menu is messed up.

I have a sitemap for the main site. I guess, I need to add this sitemapindex.xml there. Is it correct ?

I have similar issue. I tried to generate sitemapindex.xml file. Here is the log :

there is no page. Although I could click on sitemapindex n the previous message and view it.
