For anyone coming across this post in the future from a search engine or another source the issue was actually Weglot’s Auto Redirection feature:

– Weglot -> Settings -> Other options (Optional) -> Auto redirection -> Check if you want to redirect users based on their browser language (uncheck (disable) it).

– In WPML this would be: WPML -> Languages -> Browser language redirect -> Disable browser language redirect

– I’m not sure why the first few Kinsta reps pointed the finger at the Redirection plugin, maybe Occam’s razor, but I’m glad to have a logical solution to this problem possibly. Thanks again!

icl_ appears to be WPML which we had last year. I’m going to go ahead and delete all of those tables and then enable Redirection. Thanks!

– I think you’re right. The act of clearing the cache may be what’s stopping the redirect, not necessarily disabling the Redirection plugin. Our Kinsta rep has narrowed the issue down to a single nearly identical row in our wpstg0_icl_string_translations and wp_icl_string_translations tables (https://drive.google.com/file/d/1vg4gyEot6r486HjA461MId5Lml7wtAdZ/view?usp=sharing) which looks like it’s either Weglot or WPML which we had installed previously.

– I’ve reached out to Weglot support for help on this

Hi John,

The issue came back today with Redirection enabled. Here’s what https://redirect.li/http/ had to say about about this redirect: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/12D29Ltty_-jDwO2ImLXrtmAOEpIBGMgA?usp=sharing

I can see that the redirect.li/http tool says “Not being redirected with Redirection.” but here’s what happened less than 2 minutes later immediately after disabling the Redirection plugin again: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1abjks2o6MW8jImAzhMfp1pKOM5jJBr2-?usp=sharing

– It would be great to get your thoughts on this. I’ll also run it by Kinsta.

– Do you know why the issue would have stopped precisely when the Redirection plugin was disabled? Could there have been a conflict with Weglot (language translation plugin that creates our /es/ site) or the Yoast SEO Premium plugin which has its own redirects function? Of course this is all null and void if the issue comes back with Redirection disabled.

– Thanks for the link. We were using https://wheregoes.com/retracer.php (https://drive.google.com/file/d/1WCTkQzhjLzumAELhWsvHI7AKj8jZbJ9d/view?usp=sharing) but compared to https://redirect.li/http/ the wheregoes.com tracer doesn’t provide very much information.

– Our parent company is a self-hosted Laravel site located at “domain.com” while we’re using Kinsta via nginx reverse proxy in order to be located at “domain.com/product/”

– In the meantime for 250 URLs you might want to try asking your developer or hiring a freelance developer to write and execute a script in an FTP program like FileZilla which would be a lot quicker than doing it manually.
