Jen, they will remain as they are now – no reverting. So, whatever you have smushed to date will remain compressed, any if you deactivate the plugin then anything you newly upload won’t get compressed.

Hi there, sorry for the delay in a response!

By default, Smush will compress your thumbnail, medium and large sized images but it won’t optimize the original image you uploaded. So with that in mind, embed one of the cropped/resized image sizes in your post/theme, but change the permalink on it to the original full size – which won’t be compressed.
