Yes, the theme system isn’t really suitable for sites with non-WP pages and so I assume in the final release there’ll be a commented-out piece of code in index.php for switching it off ??

I would imagine that’s because of the number of themes and plugins that require 1.5. I’m sure this is encouraging more people to use the beta software than would otherwise be doing so.

When did wp-comments-reply become obsolete? Is it still in use for 1.22? Could I delete it from my installation?

I know it’s probably not doing any harm, I just don’t like clutter. It would also be one less file to edit when trying to thwart spammers by renaming wp-comments-post ??

From a design and layout standpoint WordPress seems really unfreindly. It seems like there’s multimple files that need editing. Enforced styles. Enforced formatting. Etc.

Yes, that’s how it appears at first, and you do have to dig around a little to find out how best to customise things, but most of the hardcoded formatting can be removed by using a different template function and/or altering the parameters; you can also have as many or as few template files as you want.

I find WP as customisable as any other tool out there and quite a bit more customisable than some, but as I say you will need to do some research into the template functions if you want complete control over the formatting.

Because that’s the thread where joecuk is trying to get an answer to this question. He probably has it bookmarked and would prefer to check there for the solution rather than here.

Could you both clarify what version you’re using? The loop and the call to the wp engine is different in 1.5 builds to how it is in 1.2.

I can’t get POP access to work with Gmail either – what client are you using?

If using Gravatars, I think you’d have to use the_author_email in conjunction with a Gravatar plugin or javascript. Should be doable.

You could try putting together a test file with those fields and see whether WP does anything with the information. You could also look into using the RSS import feature, though I don’t know enough about RSS to tell you whether it would be a better format for your needs than the MT one.

I believe the templates on that site are CSS only and use the default index.php from 1.22 and earlier versions. If you don’t have a copy of that you will have to re-download 1.22 and take it from there.
