However, if I change (or Live Preview) other themes the above message and behavior return.

In reply to: Hybrid-News CSS mods–first WordPress blogLoading time is really tricky. It can depend on a lot of things. I’ve been using WP Super Cache on my site ( https://jtgallery.net ) and knock on wood so far so good.
I go by the theory that the simpler the better, few widgets and plug ins cause less potential slowdowns.
But sometimes, it’s just what mood the server is in.

Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t like scrolling down long pages of big photos.

Perhaps if you had an introduction on the front page explaining your services, and either put the samples on a “Portfolio” page or lower down the front page it might be more effective in telling people what you offer right away.
