The posters question was about the infamous “Error establishing a Database connection” . Did you create a wordpress database? Did you create a wp-config.php file? Or alternately after creating the wordpress database did you use the web interface to do the install?

Try deactivating all plugins, reactivate them one at a time checking to see if widgets now work or as you continue widgets still work. If they stop working, deactivate the faulty plug-in and inform the developer of the problem

I echo sustainorder’s question “Where is WordPress 2.8.0” after all it is the afternoon of 6/10/2009 and still it is not here.

Your index.php is blank. prehaps a reinstall of WordPress would solve it.
Just a thought and might be worth trying. Have you saved your Databases and as far as that goes the whole site just for this sort of thing?

Did enought lurking in support to solve my problem. It seems on a local install that you use wordpress, root and no password=meaning don’t put one,to get you onto the next step.

I’m stuck at step two(see orginal post)which won’t work on the removeable tray drive that I’m trying to do another local install on.

This procedure, process, way of doing it or whatever term you care to use worked fine on the hard drive that I’m now on.Step two as I see it is the step where if wordpress likes what you have entered in wp-config-sample and renamed wp-config.php does the install, asks you if you want the password emailed to you and gives you a log-in screen after that.

If there isn’t a wp-config.php, wordpress asks wether you want to do one in your browser. In my case regardless of wether I create a wp-config.php or delete the made one the only thing that changes is the error message.

Just for the record I have done 3 installs of WordPress. 2 via Fantasico on different web hosts and one local install. My present problem to reiterate is a attempted local install of wordpress on a removeable tray hard drive and am trying to figure out what I’m doing wrong.

Thanks again. That’s what I tought whitespace meant, though googling it also brings a programming language by that name. But I am still missing something here as how would whitespace affect a deleted wp-config.php file? I can understand that if in any of the three places that you have to enter something you left a space or even more that you have created a whitespace error.

i.e.instead of ‘wordpress’ you went with ‘ wordpress’ for your database. As you know deleting wp-config.php causes wordpress to allow you to enter the three items in your browser which then either accepts them or rejects them. If accepted it gives you a password enabling you to login.

Thanks, I appreciate your responses. I will google whitespace.I must not understand what you mean by whitespace(entirely possible).

    Hi Michael
Question, If it is a whitespace problem with wp-config.php Why doesn’t deleting it and doing the next step(creating it as suggested in the next step)work?
