In reply to: Simple, not urgent, permalinks questionAh, thanks ceo and markjaquith. Very interesting info.
markjaquith, you almost seem to make a case for staying with the ?page_id… style links rather than going “perm.” Would you actually advise that, or is it generally outweighed by the nice logical look of the “pretty” permalinks?

In reply to: Simple, not urgent, permalinks questionNo, actually nothing broke. It’s just that any link within a post to a page on the site (as well as those in the header) remained in the old format (…/?page_id=16) rather than being converted to permalinks. Here’s an example of a page which, when navigated to from the “links” link on the header, still retains the old format:
https://www.smalltownproject.org/?page_id=16
You see, it still works, but it’s not a permalink. However, here’s the same page at its permalink location associated with clicking on the title to the page:
https://www.smalltownproject.org/recommended-links-and-more/
I can convert the old style link by hand, just wonder if it actually makes any difference. i.e., does it remain useable forever despite the fact that there are other links to that section (the “links” section) which are now in permalink form?

In reply to: Only Admins can comment and post and get emailsI’m pretty new to this too, and am probably misinterpreting your question, but maybe I can aim you to a couple of things to check. First, assuming you want anyone to be able to post comments, when you write a post (or a page) make sure you check ‘allow comments.’ You can also get to this through ‘manage–>posts–>edit’.
For the registration issues, depending on exactly what you want, you check the approppriate registration boxes under ‘options–>general’. (One requires registration and login to comment. I think the other lets people register without your having to approve them. Leaving both unchecked lets people comment without any registration at all.) You enter your admin email address there too. I believe users’ enter their email addresses when they register. (Not that you need to set it up so they have to register…)
Is that anywhere in the ballpark?

In reply to: Have I finally figured out how to caption images? Thanks Lorelle. I may not have put it clearly, but it’s in the html that I put in a post that I find I have to include the reference to width (style=”width: ###px”). I just wondered if the codex instructions alone work for others, if I need this extra bit in a post because of something (presumably) in the Fastrack style.css that necessitates it. In any event it works! ??

In reply to: How can I move “pages” and “categories” above “links”?Worked like a charm! Thanks.

In reply to: How can I move “pages” and “categories” above “links”?Ah… Thanks Kafkaesqui and Ajay. Kafkaesqui, that’s simpler than I had expected, but makes sense now that I see it! I’ll get on that shortly.

In reply to: How did my XHTML become invalid? (Beginner)Just as an update, I was indeed able to find the solution to the font size change in style.css, in the #sidebar ul section. And that section of the codex was helpful as was the other link. I’m not as clear on why adding the suggested code took away the bullets (thought ul usually added them) but I didn’ t want them anyway, so…
Thanks again.

In reply to: Opinion on WP recommended host?As a beginner I did a lot of research here and on other sites, and ended up going with Laughing Squid. I picked them because they seemed to suit my needs as a novice. Their help/sustomer support were key for me:
1) Their online documaentation, FAQ, etc, was in plain enough english and was more understandable for me than many others.
2) They do have knowledge of and experience with WP.
3) I submitted a couple of help tickets to ask them questions that would help me decide if they were for me, and they got back to me very fast despite the tickets being “low” priority. (Another webhost took a few days to get back to me on a simple question.)
4) I figured any webhost that specializes in sites for artists, nonprofits, and the like probably gets a lot of quesitions from folks without much site building/management expertise. So my questions wouldn’t annoy them. ??
I’ve only been with them a few weeks, but have had my share of questions for them, and have not been disappointed.

In reply to: How did my XHTML become invalid? (Beginner)Thanks miklb. That does get rid of those XHTML errors pertaining to the link categories, but it also shrinks text size a bit in the links section and removes the bullets from the categories. (Actually, I’m not too sold on the bullets anyway, but I’d like to be able to keep them, if only to try smaller ones.) I have a feeling I need to learn a lot more. ??
