It will work with both Simple and Variable products. For variable products, you need to use global attributes as variations. Global attributes mean the attributes created at the Product -> Attributes page. If you use attributes that created inside the product edit page, it will not work with WCPA fields.

This might not be an error. You can check if you are ticked the option to make the text field to be a required field.
