In reply to: Everything is installed! But the Home page won’t open.My whole site just disappeared a minute ago, cpanel and all. Have you contacted your host? I am no expert here but I have a feeling the issue may be with them from what you say. They should help.

In reply to: No .ht file to be found. Can’t change permissions.About creating the directory, on the photo upload, I wasn’t trying to create a directory. That’s just part of the error message where you try to upload a photo on the page where you write your post. I click on “upload”, choose my photo, then click on “upload” and that’s what I get. Consistently. Still getting it. The settings in Misc. were set like you said, yesterday. I double-checked them. It’s just not working. Is it just bug-gy or something? I’m doing nothing differently than I did the one time I actually could get a photo in there (through the quicktags, because I try it both ways – I’ll pick a photo that I have on the server and then one that I don’t to upload that way….It just doesn’t work. And I have a whole section of photos that needs to go back up. I just don’t know. Is typepad any better?

In reply to: No .ht file to be found. Can’t change permissions.Believe me I’ve been frustrated all weekend. Pulling my hair out. I’ve been working on this thing – all day yesterday, was up till 5am. Worked on it straight since 12:30 today and now it’s after midnight. Back to work tomorrow, and the other site is down, gone, it was decimated with the import. It would be nice if it were functional but it’s funky, there are a lot more issues and I’m just trying to get it up *right* because I have a 70-hr workweek ahead of me and won’t be able to tackle this again for another couple of weeks. It shouldn’t take this long.
I’d be happy to deal with the image upload if I knew WHY it doesn’t work. I still don’t.

In reply to: No .ht file to be found. Can’t change permissions.I do know the difference between a folder and a file. I read but so much of it is just greek to me. Plus postings are showing up apparently while I’m typing, so I don’t know something has been said until after I’ve sent the post. Though I do appreciate the speed of your responses, really.

In reply to: No .ht file to be found. Can’t change permissions.Okay. I may be getting somewhere on the sidebar and the comments. I thank you for that. Still can’t get photos up though.

In reply to: No .ht file to be found. Can’t change permissions.I’m sorry, I thought I was. But I’ll continue:
(777 looks like drwxrwxrwx) – where? It looks like 7-7-7 on my little check boxes.
The “If this file were writable then you could edit it.” is about files, not directories. Those files (if you have to use the icky theme editor) should be 666 (666 looks like -rw-rw-rw-). Oh, and they are located in wp-content/themes/[themename]/ …..That’s the message at the bottom of the theme editor page. I have been there. I don’t’ see any letters and yeah I was going to use the theme editor because it’s laid out better than the notepad stuff that I keep having to scroll over to see. Less chance of screwing it up when I can see what I’m doing.
1. Parent directory is: wp-content. The permission on THAT directory should be 777 – not on your index. It’s actually 7-7-7 on all of them at the moment, they used to all be 6-6-6. Again, this is where I get lost.
Depending on which file you want to edit (e.g. sidebar.php) you should change the permission on that one.
…I’m not seeing that option.Unable to create directory /home/babsjac9/public_html/wp-content/uploads/2006/07. Is its parent directory writable by the server?
That says that the directory 2006/ is not 777…..I never said anything about a directory, that’s just the error message I get when I try to upload a photo through the inline photo upload thing on the post page. Again, 777 is about the permissions on the cpanel on the index.php that that site told me to go to.5. If you don’t use the “nice” permalinks (and I’d suggest leave it them for the moment until your site works as intended!!!) – do not bother about the .htaccess file….Okay, forgotten about for now. Thanks.
I just know it’s not working.

In reply to: No .ht file to be found. Can’t change permissions. Thanks, yeah I pretty much figured that. Just working in my Cpanel. It’s just not working. And I don’t know why.

In reply to: No .ht file to be found. Can’t change permissions.Okay. Bear with me because I’m completely confused. I’m getting 6-6-6 and 7-7-7 mixed up because on one format you change it to one and on the other you change it to the other. I looked in my file manager and everything appeared to be defaulted to 6-6-6 and I thought I was supposed to change it to 7-7-7 to get it to work. I have been all over this thing all day trying to find it to do that so when I found it, I did that. Didn’t work before, doesn’t work now. Info I’ve been working on comes from here: https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Changing_File_Permissions
Yeah I want to change sidebar and comments options. And I want my photos back on the posts I had them on before, and I want to be able to put new ones on. But…I don’t get that option in my file manager and I can’t do it through the FTP program. When I try to view or edit anything through there, I just get a notepad script that says, “Silence is Golden.”
Either way, the permissions changes aren’t working. And the WP page says this: Go to your WordPress main directory, with a command like cd wordpress/
Enter chmod -R 777 wp-contentBut it doesn’t say where to type the command. I don’t think I need to be messing with that anyway.
I did change it within the individual theme. Still no dice. I just don’t know.

In reply to: No .ht file to be found. Can’t change permissions.I have been all over that page all day, thanks. That’s where I got the thing about changing the permissions to 7-7-7. I got that done. Just isn’t working. No error message on the template editor, just the same little thing at the bottom that says, “If this file were writable then you could edit it.” Which means I can’t.
I re-created the upload file error simply by trying again to upload a photo through the in-line thing on the post page:
Unable to create directory /home/babsjac9/public_html/wp-content/uploads/2006/07. Is its parent directory writable by the server?
That’s what it says. I don’t know what else to do.

In reply to: No .ht file to be found. Can’t change permissions.Error message when I try to insert a photo url on a post is simply a standard script error message. As to when I try to upload to the post, it just tells me it’s not writable by the server.
I managed to get one photo added through the quicktag one time. But only once. Back to script errors the second I copy and paste the URL in the little box.
I am guessing – only guessing here – that the issue with the photos might have something to do with permissions as well. So it might seem like I’m all over the map but I think most of the issues revolve around this whole “permissions” deal. There are things I want to do with this site that I cannot do because I can’t get the permissions changed.
I’m just a nurse who blogs. I started out on blogger, imported to the wordpress.com site yesterday and then quickly found that I can’t hack the template so I don’t want that. I like things personalized, you know? A personal blog. Simple. Clean. So I went with this, since importing absolutely decimated my blogger formatting. Now I’m committed to it for a year, paid up, and I just want to get it like I want it. That’s all.

In reply to: No .ht file to be found. Can’t change permissions.I’m just going by what the WP pages tell me. Something about an ht file for something, I don’t remember what anymore.
I did get into the index.php file up under the WP folder and changed permissions to 7-7-7 like it says to do. That, according to WP is all that I was supposed to have to do to be able to get into my template (which is something I do know a little about, I hacked and tweaked my blogger template all the time). I know the formats are different but some stuff is pretty standard. But I still can’t get into it.
Using plugins would be great if they WORKED, but they don’t. I want into my template so I can get my links set up like I want them, get my sitemeter on there, and I want to get my pictures back on my posts. That’s all I want to do.
I just don’t understand why the permissions change hasn’t worked. Still can’t get a photo on a post. Makes no sense.
Thanks.

In reply to: No .ht file to be found. Can’t change permissions.Okay I got into the index.php file through file manager on the cpanel. BUT now that I changed it all to 777, I still get the “if this file were writable you could edit it” thing on the theme editor.
So NOW what?
I emailed Sitemeter to see if they could help get that thing on there, but if I could get into my template I could put the code there myself.
I’ve blown an entire weekend trying to do this. I go back to work in the morning and now I seriously need a vacation.
Can somebody please help?

In reply to: WHAT is an FTP server?I don’t know. I give up. I’m going back to blogger. This has got to go. Nothing works. It doesn’t import like it’s supposed to, and…just, nothing works.

In reply to: WHAT is an FTP server? But it doesn’t exist! For that matter, my archives are all going to an error page but the front page is there. What is this business about updating the .ht file?
