Resolved. I needed to supply just the path to my site, not the path to my renamed admin slug. … great support over at the WordPress Android site btw

<<<If you want to have your WordPress visible when you go to https://www.yourdomain.com, you’ll have to put the files in the public_html folder normally.>>>>

Thanks. I did that, and my url is what I wanted now.

<<< Also, make sure you update your permalink settings (Settings -> Permalinks) because that might cause the 404-errors.>>>

This fixed it. I had to change Settings|Permalinks from post_name to default, and then back to post_name before site internal navigation would work. I didn’t see that step in your original instructions. Maybe you just added it (?), as I see it there now.

Thanks so much for your help.

    Hi Jeffrey,

I did this, but have got myself in a bit of bother.

I can now browse to my home page ok, but not beyond. I get error 404

The home page looks ok, even finds its image from the uploads directory

But even when I am in the WP editor, and I edit one of the non-home pages, and then click “preview changes” I get a 404.

Also the url for my site is now
    https://mydomian.com/mydomain.com

I have now have WP installed in public_html\mydomain.com

Where should I have installed WP. Directly into public_html?

I have a sub domain installed in public_html\myotherdomain.com
That’s working ok. It has something set up to point to its own document root.

I tried to back out of this by copying the files to their old location public_html\ap_wordpress
Then dropping the tables, and restoring the original database.

But I get the same issue if I try to navigate beyond the home page.

Have you any suggestions as to how I could try and diagnose the problem?

    Thanks Jeffrey, that’s a relief.

I regained access to the dashboard with just the WP_SiteURL mod to wp_config.
My site got its theme back too.

But I couldn’t then repair the change I made in the dashboard, as the config item “WordPress Address” was disabled, presumably because it being overridden by the manual option in the config file.

The document that you linked was useful. I took the option of patching the database, and then removed the manual patch, and it is ok now.

    Really pleased, thanks ??

I still want to rename the path where my site is installed, but I obviously need to do some more reading.

What is the best procedure to achieve this, ie. move the site from public_html\ap_wordpress to public_html\mydoman.com

or even better, leave things where they are, but have the browsing url go from mydomain.com/ap_wordpress/home to just mydomain.com/home

What are the url options on the Dashboards Setting|General for ? How should they be used without causing the damage done by my last dabble?

    Apologies.

I now see that the behaviour that I described only happens if I begin the definition explanation with a bullet point.

If I just use a standard paragraph your plug_in works as expected.

I will just workaround by only using std paragraphs in definitions, which is probably all that I was supposed to do in the 1st place anyway.

If you are updating this post title to be “resolved”, could also please fix the title typo so that it refers to Definitions, not Abbreviations. .. thanks.
