In reply to: Visual editor non-functional – Only have Text editorLet me say that I got this sorted out. I don’t like it when others fix a problem an then don’t share how they got it done.
While I had previously re-loaded WP, I decided to try it again. I followed the instructions here: Updating WordPress
About halfway down the page are the simplified instruction on manually updating. I used these. There are links in them to more detailed updating, but carefully reading and following these instructions worked for me.
It doesn’t take that much time to actually perform a manual update.
The only reason I can think of for the issue is that during some automatic update some of the files were corrupted or didn’t update properly. This was perhaps due to my having ‘hardened’ my WordPress site against hackers. I changed file permissions to be looser, but am now going to harden it once again with information from here: Hardening WordPress
I hope this helps.

Regarding your statement
“As far as being a hassle, I don’t think I’ve ever seen a comment posted to an image in many years of running several WordPress installs. I imagine that it has probably happened but it must be pretty rare. “
In the past 4 hours I have received 19 spam comments on images. It is a hassle especially when you choose to approve all comments and get notified when someone submits a comment.

In reply to: 404 Error when trying to preview, save draft or publish new postYeah, you can out type me – but here’s the deal – it’s not about whether you are first – it’s about whether the situation is solved. This issue seems to be intermittent. And no one as far as I can tell has solved it.
I can do more searches and here’s what I come up with – 404 Error Preview – “About 44,900” results – and I have to ask why? What do all of those have to say? Why isn’t there a repository on that (THIS) issue that allows me to read the things people have tried over the years?
But, you have graciously pointed out once again, just as so many people with the power to do so – you have pointed out that those of us looking for a solution are wrong – and only you are correct.
So, you win – I will unsubscribe so that you can do as you wish.

In reply to: 404 Error when trying to preview, save draft or publish new post@victor is evidently still having the problem.
Just did a Forums search on 404 Error on Preview – THIS thread comes up second in line.
And I am the one that started the thread.
DO YOU HAVE A SOLUTION or are you just going to gripe at other people?

In reply to: 404 Error when trying to preview, save draft or publish new postI respectfully disagree on both points –
Keeping a thread running until we find out what the issue is – you may have noted this has not been totally resolved – is a quicker way to find an answer than having to search multiple posts which may or may not have the correct terms in it. In this thread we get to gather all of the ideas and attempts people have at trying to resolve the issue. We get to gather data more efficiently.Normally I would say that posting the URL would help – In THIS instance looking at source code won’t tell you anything because the post doesn’t get posted therefor the code isn’t visible.

In reply to: 404 Error>> looking for a .HTM file – not a wordpress pageI cleaned up the database thru myPHPadmin and removed the references to Xervice – still no luck.
I tried a direct link in the browser address bar (I removed the trailing forward /) and it took me to a site built on HTML???
THEN I started looking further up the directory tree and found the client had originally designed a site in HTML and then went to WordPress.
Now I know why I have been given this headache! But I deleted the original HTML files and it all works now.
I had the same problem with duplicate comments – and I had no idea they were there. By the time I got to them I had 4 WP Comments pages to delete and even while I was doing that they re-populated.
I have removed this plugin.

In reply to: [WordPress.com Stats] WordPress.com stats – Fatal Error – or crashes siteShared hosting at WestHost.com
I contacted them last night and we spent a lot of time looking, but their techs can’t find anything that would stop anyone from seeing the site. But to be clear, what exactly needs to see exactly what on the site? And are file permissions going to be involved?
By the way, wordpress.com stats worked fine on a secondary (not sub) domain and now going to the primary, this is the issue.

In reply to: [WordPress.com Stats] WordPress.com stats – Fatal Error – or crashes siteI installed JetPack. I am NOT on GoDaddy. It says my site is inaccesible via HTTP 500 or whatever. I am really tired of hours long sitting here working on stuff that doesn’t work. I had to upload WP manually 3 times today and re-configure each time. It works great now, but I have no energy to go through the crap about a “super uber best thing since fried chicken plugin that doesn’t work.
If it were that good it would work, right?
I am soooooo tired of the claims that these things work. And on top of that, when I find the solution they ask me for it.
Really?
Why don’t people do their own beta-testing?
