In reply to: My little blog is lost…Its too bad I didn’t come across this earlier. I had an issue with one of my friends blogs. I was trying to update it for him and I messed it up. I contacted Bluehost support and they were able to at least show me what I had done. Since I didn’t have a backup and I didn’t want to try to run the upgrade again with things broken, they were able to restore the account for me from a backup which was a few days old. If you run into problems like this in the future, explore all avenues of support, as there are many places which can help you.

In reply to: page loading slowly or not at allIf you are having trouble, I’d suggest contacting Bluehost. They have very good hosting support and, while troubleshooting WordPress issues may be out of their scope of support, you’ll find that many people there will help with WordPress issues anyway. (Not saying that this is a WordPress issue, just giving an option ?? …) Telephone:
Main Line: 888-401-4678
Outside the U.S: 801-765-9400
If you have a hard time with phones they also have an email option you can use: helpdesk.bluehost.comThe problem with other hosts… or, I guess I can only say there has been 1 other host in my experience, but nevertheless, this 1 other host wouldn’t assist me in the least, but Bluehost has helped me out with WordPress issues several times via their ticketing system.

In reply to: [Plugin: WordPress.com Stats] Can’t Install Stats as a PluginSome plugins require that the extracted folder be in the plugins folder, others require that a folder or file within that folder be in the plugins folder. Make sure you have the right files in the right places and, if the plugin is a good one, it will show up.

In reply to: Bizar! No posting possible because of date = 0000-00-00I’m not sure how that happened. It may be something a plugin ruined for you. Obviously it affected the database, too, or else you could try upgrading. I’d suggest making sure your plugins are up to date and, if you are willing to pay out a little money to have an expert look at your information, you can try: https://lists.automattic.com/mailman/listinfo/wp-pro
You’ll have to give them an email address, but without seeing the code and database, its hard to know what is going on with this. Check your database for corruption, too.Forum: Plugins
In reply to: NextGen Gallery 0.72This is a pretty old post, but I’ll add a little info. First, WordPress 2.5 and later now have a gallery option built into them, but I’m not sure how it compares with NextGen Gallery. Second, 777 permissions are extremely risky. They make it easy for hackers to ruin your site. If there is any way you can avoid using 777 permissions, go that route. You may want to right click on where the image should be and see what the path to that image is and make sure it is being linked to correctly.

In reply to: How to Migrate my WordPress.com blog to www.ads-software.com?You will use the same general steps Michael provided, but you’ll want to make sure your host will handle all the plugins and themes you are moving over, and you will need to backup your plugins folder and your themes folder and bring them with you. It is also possible that your new hosting co. may have older or newer versions of php, or mysql, or other such things which may render certain plugins or themes unusable. My suggestion is to just make sure you have a good backup before you attempt the transfer.

In reply to: Working off an ip address until going liveWhile you don’t have your DNS pointed to BLuehost, you can have it point to your temporary URL at https://yourIPaddress/~username/websitename, but once you point the DNS, you’ll want to change it to actually point to your domain name and the path to the WordPress installation.

In reply to: Fantastico does not have 2.3.3 availableFantastico doesn’t always have the upgrades ready until quite some time later. You mentioned that you were using Bluehost. If this is the case, then you may want to consider using Simple Scripts which also has an installer for WordPress and the WordPress updates come much more quickly and are also easier to manage(IMHO).

In reply to: Email Notifications Not from Configured AddressTry creating an email account called [email protected] and setting your email address on wordpress as [email protected]. WordPress has some strange issues where the mail won’t work properly sometimes without it. Also, you may want to double-check that your admin email address is set properly in the database.(Use phpmyadmin)
This is the way Bluehost requires their headers to be:
Examples of headers that should work would be:
From: [email protected]
From: <[email protected]>
From: “name” <[email protected]>Examples of headers that will NOT work:
From: “[email protected]”
From: user @ domain.comAlternative for PHP Users:
– You can also modify which account should be used when sending out using the mail() function. Inside the local php.ini file, you will find a line of code that looks something like this (around line 601):sendmail_from = [email protected]
Be sure to uncomment this by deleting the ‘;’ before the directive. Also, the account you use must be a valid created account.
Hope that helps! ??Forum: Fixing WordPress
In reply to: Suggestions on Hosting CompaniesThough I am sorry about the above mentioned experience with Bluehost, I and several of my friends have been hosted with them for quite some time now. My friend is a HUGE fan of WordPress and manages over 20 WordPress sites with Bluehost, with different themes, plugins, etc., and they all run smoothly. While I have never had any difficulty logging into my Bluehost account myself, I am aware of others who have had troubles. In every case, they were able to call Bluehost and find a resolution. No matter which hosting company someone hosts with, SOMEONE is bound to complain sooner or later, but I have found Bluehost very reliable and would recommend them to anyone.

In reply to: Fatal Error – Memory size exhaustedThe php.ini file is not always available on every host. If you are hosted with Bluehost, you can click on the ‘PHPConfig’ option within the cpanel and choose to install the master php.ini file. It will install as php.ini.default, so you’ll have to rename it to php.ini. Bluehost is pretty smart about the settings, so it should automatically have the memory_limit = 32M But you can always change it to anything else if needs be. If you are not with Bluehost, you may want to check with your host to see if they allow the usage of a php.ini file.

In reply to: Bluehost censor blogs and other content! From what I have noticed, it seems that Bluehost very carefully watches and removes adult content and pornography. Softer swear words that many people often don’t see as swear words such as damn and shit, however, words like f*$#, or swear words used in extreme degradation against certain individuals. The thing about Bluehost is that they aren’t strictly “letter of the law.” If they were, the world would be a horrible place. They are considerate, and make decisions after careful consideration. This post really shouldn’t be here in the first place, and I have multiple friends and myself who host with Bluehost. I can back them up every once of the way.

In reply to: Help Setting up WP & BluehostDoing this with Fantastico is actually a little more advanced. I would recommend changing the auto-installer to Simple Scripts as the upgrade runs a lot more smoothly from there and Simple Scripts releases the new WordPress updates much more quickly. https://www.simplescripts.com/?p=articles/migrating_from_fantastico
However, if you are interested in doing it from Fantastico try this.
1st, Fantastico keeps track of the installs you have done and when trying to install anything over the top of them, Fantastico won’t allow it. You will have to go into your home folder and then to the hidden .fantasticodata folder’/home/username/.fantasticodata.
Within there you can see which folders you have regarding the different installations. Enter the folder for WordPress and delete the file within for yourdomain.com, there is also a file called installed_in_root.php. You will need to edit the code in here and change the line: $installed_in_root[“domain.com”] = 1; to $installed_in_root[“yourdomain.com”] = 0;
Keep in mind that if Fantastico is asking you to do this, it is probably going to overwrite the existing installation. Another good reason to change to Simple Scripts.
This can be a tricky process so its not a bad idea to make a backup first.Forum: Everything else WordPress
In reply to: anhosting vs bluehostMy friend has a hosting account with Bluehost and is a HUGE WordPress fan. He has around 20 different wordpress sites on his account and all of them run smoothly. The great thing is, when a new version of WordPress is released, Bluehost has a program called Simple Scripts which allows him to update his blogs quickly and easily.

In reply to: just installed bluehost & new theme? TOTALLY CONFUSED!1) Not all WordPress themes work with every version of WordPress. Yours may have become outdated and removed. You can check themes.wordpress.net for additional free themes, perhaps you will even come across an updated version of your theme again.
2) Every plugin is different and some of the old ones may cause problems, so make sure you choose recent plugins and only install ones which you need. Watch for new tabs or options under the manage, settings, design, or other such pages. Oftentimes plugins add their features or the ability to use that plugin to an existing field in your WordPress admin panel.
3) This depends on two things. First, your user settings. You will need to upload an avatar for your user. Second is the theme. Some themes will not allow this option without some advanced configuration. You may be able to find a plugin that will do it for you, though: https://www.ads-software.com/extend/plugins/
4) The older versions of WordPress did not come with the ability to use video. While the newer ones do, you likely had an older version with a plugin. Without that plugin, simply having those links will not work. You can install an version of WordPress from 1.5 onward and have that ability, and/or you can get a plugin to do it for you: https://www.ads-software.com/extend/plugins/
