Here now is the solution:
In the Jetpack plugin, under “Modules”, the module “Google Fonts (beta)” must be deactivated. Now it works as it should. No more Google fonts are loaded.

Here’s an update:
After initially coming up with (for us) unworkable solutions from wordpress support, they are now trying to prevent Jetpack from loading the Google fonts.

Received that message today:

“Hi there,

Happy to help with this. We can try disabling the load of Google fonts from Jetpack from our end. “
