Normally you can install things on a shared host, as long as it does not require you to have root access to the server.

When you want to change the WordPress URL, you also have to physically move the files and folders to match to the new location. So if you had it in a folder called /test before, then you need to move the WordPress files and folders out of the “test” folder.

To be able to change the URL setting manually since you can’t get into wp-admin, you can edit it with these instructions from a Bluehost article:

This is an issue that you have to contact Bluehost about. I believe that they only allow incomming connections to be made to ports 25 and 26, so only if Mandrill would connect to Bluehost, but not the other way around.

Contact Bluehost support to confirm this. Calling them is the least amount of wait, but you can chat to them from their homepage if you can wait a little longer.

Also Bluehost has a place in their accounts that will auto-install it for you as well.

If it changes back on its own, you have a plugin doing it and should disable them all to test.

WPyogi is correct. Your files are only the core wordpress installation, and then your themes, plugins, and media uploaded pictures/videos. All content that is text or any settings are in the Database tables and entries.

To see this content in a host like Bluehost, you would have to use the phpMyAdmin tool, select the right database, then go to posts or comments and such to see them. It is suggested not to make changes in phpMyAdmin, unless you have direct instructions, or you could take your whole site down.

I know that at Bluehost when you change the phpConfig that it will modify the .htaccess file in your main public_html folder.

If this WordPress that you want to change is in a sub-folder, it might have it’s own .htaccess that’s causing it to not use the main one. Try to find the line of code in your main .htaccess for php 5.3 and copy it to the .htaccess where your WordPress is located.

Once you have your domain pointed to Bluehost and live with them, you just need to edit the Site URL and WordPress URL settings in your wp-admin dashboard area.

Log in as the admin, and go under the General Settings section. Change both URLs to your domain name, and Save.

After you look at the above link for the difference between wordpress.COM and www.ads-software.com, if you still want the .ORG at a different hosting company, here are some options that WordPress recommends:

Use these steps from Bluehost to make sure that both URLs are set to your new site location. If they are, you should be able to get to the login page for the wp-admin and use the Lost Password option.
