Well here is a kick in the head.

This is happening on a WordPress Multisite blog. I was trying to paste this code at the blog owner, but when I logged in as the site administrator, I had no problem with the code getting stripped out.

    So that is the solution.

    Go figure.

    I am running Akismet only.

I can cut a paste this code using other blogs also.

    ridiculously stupid question:

How do I turn WordPress 3.1 into a Multisite installation, ready to accept the uploaded files and tables for the wpmu blogs I want to save?

    Thread Starter billdennis5

    (@billdennis5)

My words exactly. They have since gone back to the original name …

    (@billdennis5)

You are not going to believe this:

They apparently totally deleted the original database.

They are apparently restoring backup versions, but they are restoring them under different names.

wp-config.php points to the database under its original name, username and password, a datebase that NO LONGER EXISTS.

I just now sent them a friendly email suggesting this might the cause of the “unable to establish a database connection message I’ve been getting four four days.

In all fairness. This database is a nightmare. This WPMu installation started with a release candidate. I started letting friends and associates create their blogs when it will still to buggy for a real production site. I neglected upgrading for YEARS. I’ve had to go through it table by table to get rid of spam users. I had turned new registrations off more thna a year ago. But About a month ago, soemthing happened spam users started created new blogs and i never noticed. Right before this happened, i saw there was about 125 PAGES of blogs. Before I could clear them out, this nonsense started happrning. There are about 3 pages of valid blogs, most of which are not updated by their users.

One of the reasons I didn’t do my own downloads was that downloading a database took close to forever, and strained the resources of the server. So I relied on the hosts’ backup.

I’m going to migrate this site over to a VPS at the end of the week.

    Thanks for the advice.

I instructed them to try to upgrade to WordPress 3.1, but they told me they would not attempt to upgrade until after they got the site working by restoring to a known-working database.

I passed along your reply and the link to the previous case.

Judging by past behavior, they will send be a reply in two hours telling me they left a note for someone to look at it.

My site has been down for three days as they “look at it.” I cannot even get a straight after as to whether or not they actually even tried to restore to the older data base yet.

    (@billdennis5)

    Correct!

I took a second look at it:

    A line read define('DOMAIN_CURRENT_SITE', 'eastbluffeye.blogpeoria.com' );

    I changed to define('DOMAIN_CURRENT_SITE', 'blogpeoria.com' );

    And now all is well.

    Thank you.

    WordPress community rocks.

    (@billdennis5)

Yep. I sure did. I went back to only Akismet. And only the default theme. Same problem.

    (@billdennis5)

Andrea_r: would you mind giving it a look-see? The hosting company sent me an email overnight pronouncing the siter cured, but it is still having the exact same problems as before. Can I send you the cpanel and db usernames and password?

    Thread Starter billdennis5

    (@billdennis5)

    I’ll give that a try.

    (@billdennis5)

    Thank you.

I was stupid enough to use the one-touch upgrade without doing a backup. Now, I cannot login to the main site at blogpeoria.com.

No image file that has been uploaded will appear (even though the files are there). WPWebhost tells me it’s a redirect issue. This is the error message they are fixating on:

[07-Oct-2010 01:07:11] WordPress database error You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near ” at line 1 for query SELECT * FROM wp_site_posts ORDER BY post_published_stamp DESC LIMIT made by require, require_once, include, include, dynamic_sidebar, call_user_func_array, widget_recent_global_posts

    =================

I managed to get logged in as an administrator. I found that Blog ID 1 — the site at the root of blogpeoria.com — is missing. It was there before the upgrade. I have no idea what caused it to vanish.

I now have no plugins in the plugin folder excapt akismet. I now have only the default theme and twentyten theme (as well as the old Kubrick-based Home theme).

I even tried to go back to a backup of the ORIGINAL .htaccess file.

I have relayed this information to the host company, and I keep getting the same information back from them. They thank me for the new information then tell me I have to be patient because the retrieval process is still underway. They have been telling me this all day Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

I think there is something wrong and they aren’t telling me. Or maybe they are understaffed. I am getting no answers.

Andrea: All I know is a clicked on the button on the Dashboard to upgrade to WordPress 3.0.1

And I don’t have a recent backup on my own hard drive. I’m in contact with my host to find a recent backup and to restore ONLY tables for “wp_1”

Am i on the wrong track?

And this is the message I get when I try to call the front page up in google:

This webpage has a redirect loop.

The webpage at https://blogpeoria.com/wp-signup.php?new=blogpeoria.com has resulted in too many redirects. Clearing your cookies for this site or allowing third-party cookies may fix the problem. If not, it is possibly a server configuration issue and not a problem with your computer.

I assume this is because the site is trying to create a new site called “blogpeoria.com” but to do to a signup, there must be a site already existing called “blogpeoria.com.”

    Thread Starter billdennis5

    (@billdennis5)

    OK.

    I followed all your advice.
I removed all themes except twentyten and the kubrick-based home theme.
There are no plugins except “Akismet”

I was not able to log into the front page site, but I was able to long into a site with my admin password.

When I checked “sites” I discovered that site ID 1 was missing. I checked blogs.dir and found that all the directors for “1” were missing too.

I tried to upload a partial database from about a month earlier that includes wp_1 database information, but when I visit “sites” in the dashboard, site ID 1 is still not listed.

Wow. If my site borked or what?

Any advice, except to wait for the host company to finally retrieve a database?
