    Thanks. It’s figured out now. It wasn’t a permalink issue, but it did have to do with the use of ../ in hyperlinks in the theme itself, which caused these long URLs when called from category and archive pages.

    Unfortunately that solution did not work.

    I ended up finding one that DID work, and the site got messed up, code got lost, and now we can’t figure out how to do it again.

    What I do remember is that the temp query solution did not work. Only the one that starts with $recent_posts = $wpdb->get_results works. It’s just a matter of finding out how to correctly add a parameter to exclude category 74.
