Ok, on further research it seems to me that what I’m going to have to do is go through the WP-admin folder and change each file to suit my needs.

    To recap I want.

A simple limited interface that allows the user ONLY to:

    Edit 1 paragraph of text.
    Swap 1 photo for another.
Add and remove rows from a table and edit them

I’ll work on these on and individual basis and keep coming back to you to try and source your knowledge on each one.

In the meantime, anyone got any initial thoughts on where I could start?

Hi, thanks so much for this information. It’s understood.

I’ll explain my goal and perhaps you’ll have some thoughts on how I might acheive it.

The reason I was interested in creating pages where users could edit the site content is because the WordPress Admin interface doesn’t quite suit my needs.

I need to adjust wordpress so when a user logs on, there is a very very simple interface that offers you only a few limited specific choices.

I want these choices to be:

The user can swap one picture for another,
    Change 1 piece of text,
Add a new row in a html table, plus edit its content

    And That’s It!

And these choices need to be presented in a simple and clear way.

I’ve used wordpress before, I’ve designed themes from scratch, but this is actually adjusting the admin interface and that, at present, is beyond me and scares the bejesus out of me.

    Speak kindly to me brothers!

    Much a appreciated.

You can always get a theme to do what you want!

Haha, what I’m going to do is design the site entirely in html, not using any element of WordPress, then I’ll return to this very forum and see what we all think about putting WordPress under the hood.

I’ve enjoyed using WordPress so much, and I find it so accessible, it would be a shame to lose it.

So lets close this thread for now and I’ll be back.

Unique, perhaps, but then perhaps it’s just bad design. We’re not having the same footer, header, etc etc per page. Like I said, that’s somewhat of an experiment because it may well be tricky to navigate.

I’ll go have a look at these links, thanks a lot for getting back to me. If I don’t understand a word of them and blood starts to drip from my nose, I’ll get back on and ask you.

    Thanks again!

    Yes, well spotted!

Thanks for your help, there is still a slight gap, but as I say I am experimenting, so it’s no big deal.

I’ll be back here when I start to get into the real deal.

    Thanks again.

I like WordPress too much. I think what I’m gonna do is design a wordpress theme from scratch and that way use the layout I want. Thanks for all the posts, here’s looking at you kid.

    Yes sorry.

I’ve not been very specific have I? This is the deal… I don’t want to use a full wordpress website, but I do want to have a “Latest News” section on my site that is managed by WordPress. I’m partially there, see:

    https://www.forgemastersfilms.com/test.html

The news your looking at there is a WordPress page, viewed through a frame.

Click on READ MORE and another WordPress page will pop up. In this way I will be able to manage my news section from anywhere I want.

As a result though I need a theme that only has text, laid out nicely. No links and definitely no boarders. As you can see I’m getting there, but if you open one of the TEST boxes by clicking on “read more” the table is not centralized, it’s got a slight boarder to the right, how do I get rid of that? And the text does still not start at the very very top of the page.

Any advice would be nice, but I’m breaking the back of it.

Oh boy have I messed up this time… Is it possible that the h2 tag isn’t closed because I deleted the title tag from somewhere. I’ve been around deleting parts of this blank theme like you wouldn’t believe. Deleting parts to try and have nothing but some text in the top left corner.

    Have I gone too far?

If anyone can point me in the right direction here. I’m happy to read stuff, but I couldnt find the right stuff to read…

Hmm no, I’ve had a dabble with the code above. The issue is I downloaded a blank theme, so there really isn’t anything to change in the CSS – it’s blank.

But also, look at the font on the page. That’s with the body code inserted into the stylesheet – it doesn’t look like size 12 to me, and it looks bold.

    How queer!i

OH NO! I’m so sorry about that test there, that’s a maintenance plugin, it’s excellent if you don’t have it. I’ll get rid of it. I think the principals still apply though….
    ok I’m taking it off.

I’ve sorted this, I still find it illogical though. Perhaps it’s something to do with the images having the word “banner” in their title, or perhaps it was something to do with them being exported (as .jpg’s) from Fireworks. It happened with a second image too. Anyway I used photoshop instead, resized the image slightly and gave it a new name. It works. When computers stop being logical what do we have then? Sex I suppose.

Bizarrely, I’ve managed to sort this problem for myself – to a satisfactory standard anyway.

I opted for custom permalink structure and typed this:

    /index.php/%postname%

And it works! – it’s not perfect but it’s good enough, play about with it.

    Satisfactory!

Sounds like you and I have exactly the same problem… The adress endings are changing to your new permalink structure, but your pages remain in the same place, thus giving you the 404 error.

It’s a nightmare, I can’t believe I can’t sort this. You got any further with it?
