In reply to: A clean engadget-like theme available?I am also very interested in this, it’s kind of surprising that with the many themes available for WP, none is the ‘industrial strength’ three column theme that the blog networks such as Gawker or Weblogs Inc. use.

In reply to: Sudden spike in the number of queries usedI’m not an expert, but I am having the same problems and want to contribute two little pieces of knowledge:
1. Have you enabled WP 2.0 built-in cache by creating a ‘cache’ folder in the WP-Includes directory? For this to work, the ‘cache’ folder needs to be chmodded to 777. This could solve the issue of WP looking for and not finding the cache.
2. This is external to WP, but it really lowers the server load if you enable mySQL query cacheing. You should ask your host to do it for you, just ask for it to be enabled. Even if you don’t have any issues with WP, I think it is a very good idea to enable MySQL query cacheing –it gets rid of the dreadful “WP cannot establish a database connection” message page.
Hope this helps.
PS: Any news on the memcached thingie for WP? I saw Matt mentioning this when announcing 2.0, he said it was available, but I haven’t seen this anywhere. Also, would love to see real cacheing in WP, rather than the current disk-based cache (not as efficient).

In reply to: 3 columns theme: TriColumnI like the fact that it is three columns, and that you maxed out the advertising space… as for color selection, I got a huge headache and I only looked at it long enough to read instructions ??

In reply to: How to remove the “category” folderSo that’s the reason why /category/ (or some other word of your choice) cannot be removed, right?
Forum: Fixing WordPress
In reply to: How to remove the “category” folderI am also very keen to remove the /category/ in permalinks, it doesn’t add anything of value but it does make the URL longer and that’s bad for SEO reasons because they give higher ranking the closer the keyword is to the domain name…
So nobody got rid of the /category/ thing in permalinks? I am sure someone did… come on, share your secrets! ??

In reply to: Side-by-Side Pivot and WordPress Comparisonhey Druid, nice comparison… it’s always enlightening to see how two products stack up… I really like your site’s theme, and I was wondering if I could have a copy of the WordPress theme? I find your three column layout is very nicely done, superior to the ones currently available. If you are inclined to share the theme (which I would use in an obscure country-level domain in Spanish, not exactly visible) let me know, my mail is my b o l o n k i [at] gmail dot com.

In reply to: Back in Black2Hello Neuro, that’s great work in those themes, very nice! Any chance I can download or get a copy of your “New Neuro” theme? Because I really, really like it’s simplicity, the white space, and the two columns to the right… (the one with two columns to the right that you have for download is quite different, text gets very close to the margins and looks a bit crowded so I like the New Neuro much better, it’s the best!). Let me know if I can use it – Thanks!

In reply to: New Theme: ZaZenHello Fernando, you did a very good job with all those themes! Sorry to hear that the switch to WP 1.5 was a bit of a setback (although it doesn’t look like that in the themes).
I am interested in adding a second right sidebar to your Provisional theme (and moving the main column a bit to the left to make space for this second sidebar). Could you tell me how to do it? I think your template collection would benefit adding a three-column theme (there’s high demand for those as I see here).
Also would like to make the headbanner much thinner, just enough to show the menu… I think it would look good too. You know in terms of advertising space the top “above the fold” is the prime “real estate”, so reducing the width of the head banner/blog title makes sense (at least to me).
Let me know Fernando y saludos si es que hablas espa?±ol!

In reply to: IE problem: image in main column pushes 2nd sidebar to the bottomForum: Fixing WordPress
In reply to: IE problem: image in main column pushes 2nd sidebar to the bottomThanks Moshu, but the problem occurs even when the image is NOT wider than the post area. The post area is 450 pixels wide, and the problem begins at 380 pixels… it’s not a matter of the image sticking out beyond the post area. With an image between 380px – 450 (which is still well within post area limits) IE still pushes the second sidebar down.

In reply to: GeekTavern.comHello Stfarm, in case you are still receiving comments, let me tell you I really like the concept of the site, the one column with two sidebars. I am not a designer, nor a programmer, only a writer. But here it goes:
It seems you need a “gutter” or some margin on the main column, the left side of the blog. The letters begin way to close to the left margin of the blog; also, the blog’s margins could be “embelished” by some gradient effect, and in any case the divisory line should be finer IMHO, the line that’s there now it’s just too thick and black. Make it softer and add some margin.
Also, there is too much space between the main column and the neighboring sidebar, it’s pretty glaring to me to see on the one hand the lack of margin on the left, and on the other too much margin on the right… it’s as though the text of the main column needs to be “centered” so that it has a nice margin on each side.
A very thin “hair” of a line should probably be added to divide the two sidebars, because right now the lack of a clear frontier makes it messy, depending of how thick is the ad on each side bar. Also, I don’t think the horizontal lines separating the myriad ads on the sidebars are very good… I would eliminate them completely, and add the dividing thin line between sidebars. Perhaps a slight coloring or background shade could be added to both sidebars for clarity. Look at the relaxation theme here, it uses the shade to separate the two sidebars very nicely:
https://clemens.orth.me.uk/2005/05/15/wordpress-theme-3-column-relaxationFinally, the top header image is not integrated, looks too flat, perhaps rounding the borders a bit a la Kubrick with some white, or like in the relaxation theme. As it is now it looks a bit raw, like added as an afterthought.
I really like your theme, so this critique is in self-interest, as I would like to have a copy of it ??
