I found the problem to be in the Jetpack Discussion settings. When:

Let visitors use a WordPress.com, Twitter, Facebook, or Google account to comment

is checked, I get the error. Unchecked, works fine without captcha (we’re moderating comments).

Whew! I took a stab at creating child theme. Some straightforward, some over my head. I’ll keep working at understanding things as it will serve me well going forward.

Thanks and glad to hear that it is on your list. Since you have triggers actions on recipient events, maybe that makes it more likely to add as a different kind of trigger. But, alas, I am no programmer!

Thanks for the reply. I didn’t think that as I can’t imagine the rationale. I’ll have to experiment with themes and see if any perform “correctly”.
