Thanks! Have you checked out the Book Review Library plugin at all? Perhaps it’s more inline with what you’re looking for?

    Thx.

Although I don’t know an answer for this speaking from my own experience, when I Googled it I found this article. Note the very last paragraph. Maybe you can try the suggested solution.

    Thx.

    Hi,

There is no built-in search feature for the Book Review plugin.

    Thx.

So, based on the lack of response here I guess the solution is that there is no solution? I’ve tried every method that I’ve come across in Internet searches and nothing works. I’ve even tried using the Farbtastic color picker, which comes with its own set of issues when the widget is first added to the sidebar.

At this point I guess I have no choice but to release my plugin with a known bug. So sucks.

Ah, I just discovered wp_get_attachment_image. Much easier!

    Thx.

You’re right. I didn’t realize it would still save the thumbnail if uploaded outside the plugin. I’m not crazy about the idea of saving thumbnails for every image, so I’m undecided whether I’m going to do it this way or just try to make it clear that the plugin’s uploader should be used if they want thumbnails to be generated.

Regardless, to get the URL for the thumbnail, am I correct in assuming I have to look in the uploads folder? The thumbnail URL doesn’t appear to be in the database. I noticed that, when I upload an image, four thumbnails are generated. One is for my plugin and another I’m guessing is the featured image. Is it safe to assume that some other plugins are generating the other two?

Yes, I did. While it eliminated the problem of showing the color picker twice, the color picker didn’t work at all.

I’d really love to solve this problem, but I’m starting to wonder if it might just be easier to see about using the old Farbtastic color picker instead.

    Hi,

There is no link attached to the book cover, so there is currently no way to do this. But, your custom links should not be too far down the page unless you are putting too much content into the Synopsis field. That field is only intended to be used for the description of the book. Your review should still be written in the main WordPress editor. This way, it will show the book’s synopsis, then the links, then your review of the book.

    Thx.

    Hey WomperScomper,

The Book Review plugin is meant to be used by book bloggers and reviewers to write single reviews for different books. It’s not meant to be used on a crowd-sourced review site, and so there is no way for users to post their own reviews (although that sounds exactly like what Goodreads does). I don’t have any intention of adding that in either as it would drastically change the intended purpose of the plugin.

Yes, the plugin does display the book data at the top, but it only does so at the top of a post, not at the top of a page. I’d imagine that you would likely want to show those details at the page-level.

    Good luck with your project!

Unfortunately, not at this time, no. This plugin is intended more for bloggers who post their reviews on their blog as opposed to creating pages of reviews. Do you think the Book Review Library plugin might be more what you’re looking for?

So I’ve spent some time trying out the plugin you mentioned and here is my take on the differences:

    • The Book Review plugin is primarily tailored for book bloggers and other reviewers who want to write their reviews as individual blog posts. The Book Review Library plugin seems to be geared more towards librarians and others who want to maintain a catalogue of their books.
    • The Book Review plugin will add details about a book at the top of every post where that information has been provided. The Book Review Library plugin provides a shortcode which you will likely add to a page that will list all of the books in your catalogue.

Ultimately, it comes down to how you plan to show your book reviews. Are you a book blogger or reviewer who wants to add information about a book to all of the reviews that you post on your blog? If so, then the Book Review plugin is probably the one you want. Or are you a librarian who wants to catalogue and organize books and make them available on a separate page of your web site, independent of your blog? In that case, you probably want the Book Review Library plugin.

Of course, if you’re still unsure you can always try out both to see which makes more sense for you.

    Cheers!
