In reply to: Multisite not domain mappingHey Don,
Thanks again … It seems one of my hurdles was that the cache wasnt clearing … My test domain “saigonberiln.com” now directs to “factandfiction.tv/nickfernandez”.
Whoo hoo! All good. Very exciting.
Yes, sorry about the nickfernandez.com.au confusion … I didnt explain that its not been bought yet. I was using the saigonberlin.com address (which I have owned for sometime and not yet used) as a test while I organsie purchase of nickfernandez.com.au., which is a little more pricey than a straight up .com but as you found, someone else owns nickfernandez.com and I am in Australia where the use of .com.au is pretty standard as you would guess.
So now, my next task is to work out how I make all links look like my domain of choice. I haven’t yet looked into this but if you have any 101 tips, I would be more than happy. What do we think of this kind of plugin to facilitate the update?
Once again, many thanks for your help and time. Great to have such great support here.
Makes one feel that the world is an ok place!

In reply to: Multisite not domain mappingOK … an update.
I installed WP to root and now I think I can see what you mean … I think.
When I created the new install I used Softaculous app provided by Lunarpages on their cPanel.
So when I went to the Sites listing in the network admin I saw this:
Then I could “add new” which then allows me to edit those fields about the URLS/domain as you wrote about. I think before the install for WP in the wrong place meant nothing worked as I read it would.
So now I added as an example where I have left the original site build which is https://factandficion.tv/nickfernandez which looks like this in the admin:
So to answer my own question (I hope), “main site” above is just where the WP is installed and so where the admin lives etc. Is that right? If so then I need to work out how to link the site with the root based WP install and how to get rid of the one I made in the subfolder “https://factandfiction.tv/nickfernandez/”. How do I change that association?
I am a bit confused about where you wrote above “your first subsite will end up being located at https://factandfiction.tv/nickfernandez/your-first-subsite.” All i wanted to do was use my server at factandfiction.tv to host the site and then to map it to the domain nickfernandez.com.au , so this was the sole purpose of mapping, so not sure about why it would still be lots of writing? Confused. Also, dont really get why in this case it would be https://factandfiction.tv/nickfernandez/your-first-subsite. Why not just nickfernandez folder/level as the site name?

In reply to: Multisite not domain mappingHi there,
I am a bit confused by the term “main site”. I am using my server factandfiction.tv to host the site that will ultimately use the domain nickfernandez.com.au (for now I am testing with another domain I own called htt://saigonberlin.com to see if I can get it working).
So far I think my main problem is that to get my the domain of choice I need to:
1. be able to domain map
2. I can only domain map with the multisite install
3. To do all this I need to WP multisite at the root level.
4. Once WP is installed at root I should be able to use my admin to map as you first instructed.Does this sound correct? I might add that nowhere, either in the multisite admin or the specific site admin can I modify any field concerning URLs/domains. Will this change once I move the WPP install to root? Can I keep my current individual site build (that I want to ultimately use the domain nickfernandez.com.au) positioned in the sub folder “https://factandfiction.tv/nickfernandez/” or will it need to go to root as well. I am a bit worried about moving it as when I tested this at one point I couldn’t keep all the work formatting and building etc I had done on the site. WHat is the best (most comprehensive and safe) way to move the current build if i need to do so?
Srry this is so simple. Howver, i am sure you can see my need for help. Once again. many many many thanks.

In reply to: [WordPress MU Domain Mapping] Does plugin work when WP not in rootHi there
I didnt see this answer and posted elsewhere (sorry about the double up, I do need all the help I can get).
I was told that in the latest versions of WP I do not need the domain mapping plugin to choose a domain for a multisite installation – because it has been superseded by functionality in WP. If I have no past builds to think about because this is a new network … Do I need this plugin to simply choose my domain for the site?
Or did I misunderstand my other advice?
However, if I need the plugin working …
When you say:
“root of the website” I took this to mean the root of the server as at the moment I have the site and WP install in a subfolder which is only one level down at “root/nickfernandez” on my server.
I am sorry for these basic questions, I really thought this simple build would b easy but now I have spent two days trying to finish the domain setting with no luck. Oh well. Thanks again BTW.
Nick

In reply to: Multisite not domain mappingHi there Don,
Is there something wrong with my multisite install if it looks like this on the page you are sending me to?
PS.
I cannot seem to change anything on these pages. Am I in the wrong place or is there a problem. I actually started off with non multisite install of WP but then upgraded as the blogs seemed to say I needed multisite to domain map.
I really appreciate your help on this. Wonderful stuff.
