In reply to: WordPress hacked siteThanks Esmi, as usual great help. I’m chasing some of these up right now.
What I’m trying to get at is the root cause.
As I don’t have control over the hosting I need to work out whether this is an issue I need to look into regarding the site scripting or whether I need to recommend more secure hosting. My gut instinct is it is a hosting issue but would like to invite input from anyone who has experience with this.
or another way of putting it:
Can you create posts by non registered users and alter theme php files such as header.php simply by exploiting vulnerabilities in the WordPress installation or do you really need some kind of FTP to do thet?
Thanks

In reply to: WYSIWYG editor bug – please help :-)I’ve seen that before when a plugin has conflicted with jQuery because the server wasn’t properly configured with json. When you say moved location, have you changed hosting platform or domain? Have you tried deactivating all of your plugins? It sounds like a JavaScript conflict of some kind.

In reply to: Major SpammingI had loads on one of my installations once. Really horrible stuff as well. Akismet sorted it out in the end. That’s what I would use if you haven’t already tried it. It can be a major problem though, once you have been identified as a target. Also turning comments off globally for a while can help, just remember that your old posts that have comments turned in will override this so you’ll need to go through them.
Esmi yep hogwash it is then!
Caseyctg, it’s not my decision to make unfortunately as it’s my clients website. I recommended WordPress for their CMS needs and so now it looks like I’m recommending something which isn’t up to the job or non standard, which I know clearly isn’t the case as I’ve been using wordpress for years and very very happy with it. The hosting company is our local telecoms company who supply their business internet access and it’s all packaged as a bundle.
Esmi have you heard of this problem before where the hosting supplier say they won’t update the php outside the update cycle supplied by Red Hat? Or have you heard of the situation where PHP is patched rather than updated so the version number isn’t a true reflection of the of how up to date PHP actually is?
I’m starting to wonder if the hosters are telling me the truth or I’m getting a bit of hogwash.
yes thanks Esmi it does seem that way but according to the hosting supplier this is the correct and up to date version even though it only says version 5.1.6.

Forum: Installing WordPress
In reply to: simple WordPress installation questionThanks for your answer, I’ve got another question about is there a way in phpmyadmin to just export the posts tables into a fresh install but will start a new thread i think.
I sorted it, after getting on to my server support. I had to add anothersite.com as a parked domain on to mywebsite.com account in cpanel with the manage redirection option set to mywebsite.com/subblog. This worked though I had clear browser cache / history a few timed during the process. Also my server support had to add the ip addresses of where the domain was registered at as allowable ip addresses as I got a couple of errors parking the domain.

In reply to: wp_nav_menu => arrayWell I’ve pretty much exhausted every walker tutorial and forum query. There just isn’t enough out there to help me with what i want.
I wouldn’t class myself as possessing a thorough and in depth knowledge of PHP being self taught, but can generally get by, however I’m no better equipped to grapple the concept of wordpress walkers and therefore no closer to my goal and have to admit defeat.
There’s a workaround function tutorial which I followed and that works how I want the menu to work. This doesn’t work with any menus set up in admin=>appearance=>menus and doesn’t work with wp_nav_menu() function but instead, uses the hierarchical structure of the old style parent attributes in the admin=> pages facility.
It’s a shame because my clients will understand the graphical nature of the menu editing facility and the drag and drop method and instead they will have to assign parents to sub pages and sub page parents to sub – sub pages via drop down menus and will have to give each page a numerical order ID to assign placement within the menu which is confusing to say the least.
What a shame. I would like to leave this thread open please as I would like to crack this even if it is too late for this deadline.
