Resolved.

Since I posted my questions, I found reference to the “Featured Image” link on the bottom-right of the post page, and I see that setting a featured image for a post now shows my image. Learning.

Consider my original question resolved: I have other questions, but I’ll dig before asking. Thanks.

I also really dig the theme.

I have the same issue with the “continue reading” button, but not on archive pages; rather, on my first blog post under the main menu. It’s in the “featured-content” class which shows the_excerpt() instead of the_content().

Anyway I can turn-off “Featured content” for the blog without having to create a child theme?

Did you ever figure out how to solve this? I have the exact same problem. I found this answer on the expound support page:

But that doesn’t really address the problem as it’s my topmost post that I want to entirely view, not archive pages (as he mentions here.)
