When I place a widget in the sidebar, it just pushes the menu down. My page is dewittchoirs.org. I have left the sidebar active on the home page and last page (pops concert). The only active widget I have in place is my event calendar (in the common top sidebar). It appears correctly on the ‘home’ page, but is joined by the menu on the ‘pops concert’ page.
