Can you tell me what this error message means and why it’s being generated?

The plugin generated 2 characters of unexpected output during activation. If you notice “headers already sent” messages, problems with syndication feeds or other issues, try deactivating or removing this plugin.

I moved the site to a new domain name and really want to fix this in the database (I assume) and not uninstall/re-install NGG.

When the NGG plug-in is activated, now, it appears to function, but conflicts with my theme’s background color specifications, and maybe more.
