  • Matt, any word yet on how to be added to the hosting page? Since we’ve been hosting WP sites since the early versions, I would love to see us added. I’ve e-mailed, but no response. :-/ Now that we’re offering “PHP only” servers (starting tomorrow), it’s an even bigger perk for WP users. No lag time created by other CMS systems that cause high server loads!

    Plus, for clients referred to us by the WP hosting page (or these forums), we’ll be making donations to help WP out. It’s a win-win for everyone … if only we can get through the hoops to be added.

    Yep, you can do it! You would have to call just the categories you want to list – you can find the tags to use in the Codex at https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Template_Tags/list_cats or https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Template_Tags (in case you want other options.) Hope that helps!

    Which version of WP are you using?

    Alas, if only there was a “subscribe” function that allowed for updates via e-mail to subscribed threads. Maybe that functionality from WP could somehow be integrated here? I’ve always missed that feature with the WP forums…

    That works great for backing up your database to restore it in WP, but it doesn’t help if you wanted to move to another CMS, unfortunately.

    My view is that if SixApart want to draw people in, then they need to write the tools for people to use. WordPress code is open source – they can see exactly what to do, and how to do it.

    MT has done this. They wrote – from the beginning – tools to import *AND* export data. I agree with others that this is a sorely missing feature from WP. There should be some way to export the data out in case you need a backup, or in case you want to leave WP.
    And while I realize it is open source, so people *can* develop these things, well… we’re not all developers. Some of us are just common, average users.

    Does the page reload or anything? Do you get any sort of error? Have you tried resetting the password?

    charle97, as I posted on another thread – I’ve catered to blogs for almost 3 years now, and it is my full time job, my full time business, and I am very proud of the company I have built. I have over 375 accounts – many of which host multiple domains within their accounts, so it really accounts for a lot more clients than that. I have numerous testimonials to how reliable our services are.
    I chose to focus on weblogs when I first started because there was a need – most hosts were still clueless about blogs, how they worked, the server requirements we had, etc. Prior to hosting blogs, I worked for years in IT, with a variety of types of sites; in addition, I owned my own ecommerce business. I have years of experience with hosting, from all levels. (The company I worked for had a partnership with PSI when they were still in business; I worked with a wide variety of clients.)
    So, while I can appreciate your sentiment that you avoid hosts with “blog” in their name, you have never explained in these forums why, or what reasons you have to support this sentiment. If you had a bad experience, I’m sorry. But please don’t blanket the entire “nitche” market and say that we are all bad.
    I’m not just a blog host though … I am a WordPress user. Heck, I named it. I know Matt personally – to the level that he has been to my house for dinner. So I’m not just some faceless, nameless person running a blog hosting company – I’m a part of the blogosphere, I’m out there – I meet people, they get to know me. I try my best to bring hosting to a very personal level.
    What happened with Bloghosts is truly a shame. But don’t generalize and say that any host with “blog” in the name is bad. The same fate has happened to many hosting companies before this event, some with big names, and many without “blog” anywhere in the title.
    I’ll end my rant now. Sorry if I seem a bit zealous about this, but it’s my reputation on the line.

    Hmmm… not sure about the advice to “stay away from all hosts with blog in their name,” since I own and have run Blogomania for close to 3 years without any problems. It is my full time job, and I have a good support team to help keep things up and running. We have a record of almost no downtime (never say never, it will come back to haunt you) and have close to 400 satisfied clients.
    We offer both cPanel and Fantastico; WordPress installs take a matter of minutes, everything is ready on the server for you and it is configured for your needs already.
    And I don’t just support WordPress clients … I use WordPress myself.
    I understand the pain involved in moving a website, so the day I heard about Bloghosts closing down, I made the offer of the first month of hosting *FREE* with Blogomania for any Bloghost clients. Also, with access to your current cPanel, we can assist you with migrating your site. (Unfortunately, the cPanel migration script is not able to run on the Bloghost servers, so moves must be done manually.)

    Yes, I resize and create thumbnails by hand – but that is because I sometimes (not often, but on occassion) crop the images to cut out extra space. That gives me time to pick out photos I want to post and so forth, so I don’t mind. Also, I like to try to pick something for the thumbnail that might grab people’s attention because I display them at the top of my main blog.

    I use essentially a plain WP install for my site, along with some fabulous custom code (CSS & javascript) that I hired Jennifer of ScriptyGoddess.com to create for me. You can view it at Pixelog.org.
