So did go through the actual install process on the root directory? Just asking since you mentioned that you wanted to move the installation to /blog.

Also what message are you seeing when you go to /wp-admin?

Can you be little bit more specific? Are you stating that you were not able to access the install.php to start the install or are you saying that you were able to install WordPress but are not able to see your website? Can you also share any errors that popped up?

Did you try deactivating your plugins to see if the site comes back? This usually does it for me when I get a HTTP Error 500.

How to deactivate all plugins when not able to access the administrative menus?
Sometimes it may be necessary to deactivate all plugins, but you can't access the administrative menus to do so. One of two methods are available to deactivate all plugins.

Use phpMyAdmin to deactivate all plugins.

In the table wp_options, under the option_name column (field) find the active_plugins row
Change the option_value field to: a:0:{}
Or reset your plugins folder via FTP or the file manager provided in your host's control panel. This method preserves plugin options but requires plugins be manually reactivated.

Via FTP or your host's file manager, navigate to the wp-contents folder (directory)
Via FTP or your host's file manager, rename the folder "plugins" to "plugins.hold"
Login to your WordPress administration plugins page (/wp-admin/plugins.php) - this will disable any plugin that is "missing".
Via FTP or your host's file manager, rename "plugins.hold" back to "plugins"

I would say just stay with it and learn. If your website was running on WordPress.com then you should be very familiar with the admin side as well. There are many e-commerce plug-ins that will give you the options to sell digital and physical copies and also manage customer mailing lists. And if you get stuck on something, everyone here is pretty helpful.

Which linux did you end up choosing for your EC2? I went with the Amazon Linux and followed their official instruction on installing WordPress.

I do not believe you can get a FTP access your site on WordPress.com account.
Try asking on their support forum at https://en.forums.wordpress.com/. This current site www.ads-software.com is only for self hosted sites. Good luck.

Are you stating that all your /2016/ uploads were uploading to a /2015/ folder?

I have an option ‘Organize my uploads into month- and year-based folders’ under Settings -> Media. I just have that option clicked and what ever I upload goes into a /year/month/ format. So in 2017 the WordPress will automatically create a 2017 folder. Is this the option you are looking for?

Were you able to upload pictures before and all of a sudden can’t? Or is this a new site?

Are you trying to do a local install? If not, you would have to upload your files to the home directory of your webhost. Which company this you buy hosting from?

As far as you being locked out of dashboard, just access your site using a FTP program and change the directory name of your active theme. That will hopefully activate your default theme and you should be able to access your site.

Can’t you just write /%postname%.html into the permalink structure? I’m not sure if this is the best way of doing this though.
