How distracted, not to mention harsh, that I am ??
In reality, before the update there was only one catalog in the parent container, and the link to the pdf worked, adding the other catalog (after the update) the onclick rightly took precedence.
One last thing about the automatic update I have enabled them on all the sites I manage but this (5.5.3) was done automatically despite the preferences and it seems for a bug as I have read in the wp developer forum.
