Thank you for the replies, @jakept and @joyously. I’ve reached out to the developer of ARI Fancy Lightbox for further support. It appears that Gutenberg is to blame.

@joyously: I’ve noticed that those images in the second post do not load quickly and were likely the full size images that I originally uploaded. I’m baffled as to why WordPress thinks it should use the original images as the thumbnails.

When I add a gallery to my post, I’m only asked which images I want to insert and what their title/caption/alt text/description should be. There are no options provided which allow me to choose whether thumbnails are used or whether I want to alter the images size. There does not appear to be a method to insert a gallery into a post which uses smaller preview thumbnails but then displays the full size images when clicked on.

If I want to insert a gallery into my post, I can either use images optimized to thumbnail size, which doesn’t look good when clicked on, or I can use the original images which look great when clicked on but do not load quickly. If you know a way to work around this limitation, please let me know!
