Thanks for the reply.
I have now got archive-sale.php working, so that /sale/ now displays a list of all the posts from the sale post type. However as the post editor itself is empty due to the use of Custom Fields, no content is actually displayed.

Now the content itself doesn’t worry me, however I’m still unsure how to get the post thumbnails to display with the post on the archive page.

Install a new version of WordPress at /new
Download the database of mydomain.com
Upload it to the database of mydomain.com/new
Copy wp-content folder from mydomain.com to mydomain.com/new.

The instructions are brief, but it gives you the general idea.

Just re-install WordPress like you did before. If there is no WP there it should be like starting on a fresh camvas.

No, thats why you should always keep backups.

No, its just a fresh version makes sure nothing is corrupted or has been deleted accidentally.

Could you try putting them in htdocs again and also post your site url?

Not really sure how your coding the theme so its hard to tell you exactly what to fix. Its not ideal but you could hardcode the image. Ie: put the src directly as the image rather than /….

Could you not just delete the category if its not in use?
